Update: I probably should have filed this under "AI" and not "Quests" - and it appears as though this is not exclusive to megabeasts and the like as all populations appear to be unable to identify either party of a conflict that the Adventurer is involved in. So if I describe to a villager that I killed his friend, he still replies with "an unknown creature is slain - it was inevitable", and does not turn hostile or spit at me. Upon assuming a secret identity, witnesses to a conflict place me by my actual identity, but still view the victim as "unknown".

Thread and Toady's answer:

gnome:
"However, the issue is a little confusing so I thought maybe some further elaboration maybe necessary - it appears to be that people seem to be unable to identify me in combat with anyone else. The first thing I did was go on a quest to kill a forest titan, only to find that although I was able to complete the quest, both my lord and hearthmates were underwhelmed with my summary of the incident, saying ""an unknown creature is slain - it was inevitable". My next test was to just assault a random villager in front of the co-occupants of his home - they were able to identify that there was a battle going on, but were unable to place me or the victim as participants in the conflict, giving the same message yet again. If someone is slain they recognize them as dead but their knowledge of the incident appears to be out of sorts.

Also, after assuming a secret identity they now recognize me as a participant or aggressor in a conflict by my actual identity, seeing me as "unhinged" for starting a random conflict, but still not recognizing the victim regardless of their relation to them."

Toady One:
"Ah, yeah, I had a minor indication of this before the release, but I wasn't sure what was going on. I'll investigate."

just heard this: "in a time before time somebody attacked somebody"
the incapability to aknowledge someone identity seems also present for world gen events

I believe I've figured out what's going on here:
On the surface, it looks as if the game is failing to remember the player's part in events. What I've seen suggests otherwise. I performed a piece of music in front of someone, which yielded the expected "An unknown creature performed [musical form.]" However, when I asked the person in question how he was feeling, he responded "You performed [musical form.] It's very interesting."

In short, the name code is borked.

This bears a strong resemblance to 0010423, in which the animated corpses of historical figures are named as if they were generic zombies.

Apparently this was fixed by shouting your name out loud 0010354 , they can learn your name through this but it needs to be broadcasted because they lack the innate knowledge they used to have of people.

link to note: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=10354#c37173 [^]

I don't think its so strictly name based however, since it seems that dwarves cannot recognise people they should know & have lived with when loaded in (and why should they know a stranger?) spies also are blatent & unrestricted so i think its a problem with recognising characteristics & features, which was talked about by Toady during his talks prior to the release, in how much detail that got in though is unknown.

Shouting you're somebody and then shouting you're a secret identity is a double positive, your original identity is null & void as result and its probably easy to see how the original identity's problems (in summary) could have been missed while focusing on the success of how well the fake identity sticks & is used.

Again since DF is so mutual with relationships, if you've never met a fake identity, its treated as your real identity until it is learnt by the people around you by shouting the fact.

I have a little bit of information to add. I found a troll in a cave from hearing a rumor. I killed the troll and then went back to the fortress to spread the rumor.

When I spread the rumor to someone, they say "an unknown creature is slain - it was inevitable". I then ask the same dwarf about the creature in the "Ask about somebody" menu and they replied back that the named creature was dead. I then went a short distance and asked somebody else about the troll using its name and they replied that it "is a dangerous animal" implying that they didn't know that it was dead.

I offloaded the site and went back in and then everybody I asked said that the named troll was dead. This implies that the program knew exactly which creature was slain because the rumor was spread successfully when I was off-site. I have no idea whether I got any reputation credit for it though.

I fixed a few issues and got a night troll quest turned in properly, and was also praised for heroism by non-quest givers that heard about it, so I'm tentatively closing this. There could be some ongoing issues, since the identity code is tricky.
