... then going down four levels, digging out all the up stairs (with d-z), and then fooling about for a few minutes will crash the game. I don't know 100% that the stairs is related to the crash (I've been actually playing the game and experiencing the crash with 5/5 continuations from this point crashing) but it seems like maybe it is.

Update: It seems to have nothing to do with the stairs, but I have a save which makes it much more reproducible.

Load the save, wait 3-4 minutes, on my machine it crashes consistently.

Equipment corruption (0010369). Both the Armor and Gloves military equipment specific item sections contain "Lanamirau" (twice for the gloves).
