This is probably related to the fact that deceased creatures never leave the unit list. Unless its changed since 40dX. |

Uh, well, the critters I dropped into magma in 31.03 (while they were in cages) successfully died and left the unit list, although that may be because they were wooden cages and they 'deleted' the goblins when they burst into flames.
My question is, are they shown as still "Caged" (that is, otherwise alive) in the unit list, in this bug? |

Hmm try digging the ice, maybe the cages are encased in it with animals still alive? |

Logical2u -- you had creatures die on your map and leave the unit list? That may well have been a bug.
But yeah, the important thing for this report is whether they show up as "Deceased" or not.

Footkerchief - they were trapped in cages, and I dumped the cages into lava. Then they didn't show up among the goblins that died from other causes.
I abandoned that fortress so the unit list got cleared, but I'll try to get it to reproduce sometime. |

Animals still show as 'caged' and not deceased on unit screen. I didn't try digging the ice out, but the river thawed in the spring and there didn't appear to be anything in the tile. Next winter I'll dig the tile out and see if there's anything there. |

this is still a problem in .25
I have around 10 goblins in cages that have frozen in a pond. They still show up on the units list, as well as all "restraint" assignment lists which is quite irritating to have to scroll past whenever I want to put a donkey in a cage or something.
Zooming to the creatures brings you to the place in the pond where the cages froze. Will try digging them out when I get a chance.

Thawing ice does not reveal any items that were previously located there, but digging it out will.
If you actually destroy the cage (e.g. by atomsmashing it or throwing it in a chasm), then anything inside will be killed with the message "has died in a cage". |

Cages are not destroyed when encased in ice (or even obsidian). They may have become invisible (0000895), but they still existed and could have been recovered. The critters inside, meanwhile, weren't listed as deceased because they never died (0001599). |
