This didn't need two separate reports. You can add extra info in a note. I'm merging the reports now.
How large is the save folder currently? What's the setting for the COMPRESSED_SAVES init option? How high does DF's memory usage get during the save/abandon process? |

Footkerchief - I can answer for my own save experiencing identical problems in addition to a crash left running (the save/abandon issue cropped up first):
Compressed Saves is ON in my case
Memory usage on opening my save game shoots up to a little over 500MB. It stays there until a crash, whether caused by save or abandon, or letting the game run. It does seem possible it's bouncing off a 512MB cap and that is causing my crashes (how could I find out?)
The save folder was about 30MB in both cases. I uploaded a copy linked in a previous comment if you want to take a look.

512MB is no problem. The memory limit is 2 GB. I was wondering if the RAM usage gets that high during the process of saving the game -- some large worlds and embark areas are blowing out the limit in this version -- but if your save is only 30MB, that's probably not the case. |

Does the save crash for you on save, abandon, and run? I have had the problem on both computers I tried it on. (Both Windows XP).
I was thinking it was 512 MB becasue all of those lead to a crash for me. My thinking was it starts about there and when any of save, run, or abandon uses even a little more memory, it crashes since it hits the limit. But based on what you said, I suppose not.
The trouble started with the save (and possibly abandon) issue a few real life hours before it came to its current state (where running even briefly leads to a crash).
My only real guess is it has something to do with the # of immigrants - most people seem to start hitting this around 50/60. Or possibly hospital or military related - I have an almost obscene number of injured dwarves and someone suggested it could be related to a recently set up hospital. |

I can reproduce a save crash when i got some (ex goblin) copper items marked for melting. I removed the melting tag - no more save crash
Maybe thats related |

I can confirm that my save (the one I posted) does NOT crash on save (didn't check abandon) when all the melt designations are removed. (via z-stocks)
My save still crashes when allowed to run for a time, unfortunately. Two separate issues, it seems like.
Perhaps the reason this is associated with a higher number of dwarves is because that's also when higher numbers of goblins - and their stuff which gets tagged for melting - appears. |

I didn't get a chance to check if JimboOmega's save is still broken, but SkilledNewbie's save still had an abandon crash in 0.31.05. It comes from abandoning if you have a box/cabinet master room assigned to somebody. This is fixed for 0.31.06. |

Reminder sent to: JimboOmega Does your save still crash in 0.31.25? |
