Summary | 0002127: Picks stored in stock pile will not be equipped by those with mining job enable and mining area designated. |
Description | Picks stored in stock pile will not be equipped by those with mining job enable and mining area designated. |
Steps To Reproduce | Have dorfs enable mining, then have them with picks go mine for a bit, then ask them to go haul. Then designate a stockpile for weapons, and let the picks get stored, then get the miners interested in mining. |
Additional Information | Once I disabled picks from the stockpile the miners were able to equip their picks. |

I have never seen this as a problem, but have had it so once my dwarf got attached to the pick, it became forbidden on its own, yet he still used it, but when I claimed it, he put it away and now no one can use it. Doesn't show up in military screen either. |

I think I ran into this issue twice now. Once in .03 and now again in .08. I created a thread about it when it happened in .03: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=58388.0 [^]
In my case it happened on a Windows 7 machine.
Now my current fort has the issue. I've uploaded a save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2549 [^]
Note that this save was started in .06 and upgraded to .08.
Everything was fine until a couple of miners died during caveins while I was mining out the obsidian farm near the magma sea. New miners will not pick up the picks in the finished goods/weapons stockpile near the trade depot. The dwarves in question do not have any military history (in my fortress, at any rate).
I've set Kadol Astellogem (stoneworker) and Mebzuth Indrungak (peasant) to be miners, but they will not pickup their equipment. There is a legendary miner that does still mine, but he was a miner since before the bug presented itself.
I've also experienced first hand that migrating miners will perform their duties without any issues (probably because they bring their own picks with them)

This may be related to the military equipment bugs.
If you are using a utility like DT, don't. You need to enable the labor in game or they will never pick up their equipment.
If your fortress is large you may need to have an arsenal dwarf assign the equipment to the miners, so he needs an office and time to work.
Even then, its hit or miss. Sometimes it works right away, other times the dwarf may never, ever pick up a mining pick ever again regardless of what you do or how many new mining picks you make.

This happens still in 34.06 if the picks are assigned to military dwarves. If you de-assigned them, the miners get them and start to dig. Easy to test save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=6021 [^] |
