0002369: Large (oversized) equipment still gets assigned to empty squad positions
This is a repost of 0000702 since I can't reopen someone else's issues.
The bug where the arsenal dwarf assigns equipment of wrong size has just happened to me in 31.06.

The bugged dwarf is the very last one, named Sibrek, in the third squad. Right now, not only he's not wearing half of his armor but he's also fighting a gigantic caterpillar! Enjoy.

Is this a new game in .06 or one that you transferred to .06? There could be issues with older saves here.

That could be the reason right there. Maybe try getting rid of all large armor in your fort?

More specifically, get them to unequip the armor (forbidding it might work) and then see if it still gets reassigned.

Dumping should also work since armor isn't owned. You can dump items currently worn by militia. Possibly melting the offending items and trading for new ones to confirm if this is simply due to an old assignment the arsenal dwarf made pre- .06?

Footkerchief: That has already happened. Prior to 31.06 I'd always forbidden large equipment as soon as it entered the map to make sure nobody would try to equip it. When 31.06 came out, I've unforbidden all stuff, thinking it's no longer necessary. It worked for some time but when I stared melting unused equipment it obviously reduced the number of available stuff and eventually the very last dwarf go assigned large equipment.

EDIT: Just to be sure, the large equipment got assigned in 31.06, and only after several days of using the new version.

It almost looks like large equipment weren't entirely blocked, just moved to the lowest priority.

I know this might be a post-issue of using an old save but I can't think of any reason why would I need to regen a world for this particular bug.

I might have found the cause: the arsenal dwarf seems to be issuing large equipment to empty positions. When you put a dwarf to that position he'll have large equipment assigned for a while. When the arsenal dwarf gets to updating he'll fix that.

Seems like empty positions don't take into account the size of your civilizations. This might actually be intentional in preparation for civilizations with different races/castes but seems a bit premature in a Dwarf-only game.

I think this might be closed. I haven't tested it yet but I think the abolishment of the arsenal dwarf should fix this problem... empty positions will get any size of equipment assigned, but once you put a dwarf in that position, it automatically updates. IF I understand correctly the way the system works without an arsenal dwarf.
