Summary | 0002595: DF crashes when falling HFS creature hits the ground |
Description | After having detected a goblin ambush I decide testing to send a near military dwarf alone to see if he can handle the ambush; of course he is killed... But because the ambush happen just before spring, the game made a save while the dwarf is still alive, so I CTRL-ALT-DEL Dwarf Fortress and reload the spring auto-save. Sadly the savegame have been corrupted and DF always crash around 20 steps after unpause the game :-(

Do you get any error message when it crashes? |

And additional info, the previous auto save (winter 153) is working fine. |

What makes you think the save is "corrupted" per se? Often these seemingly random crashes are caused by creatures (e.g. ambushers, invaders, forgotten beasts, etc) entering the map. |

Two things:
-First, the save is a seasonal save; so I didn't left the game after it and the game was working (means : successfully continue after step 20). I only kill DF myself (CTRL+ALT+DEL) after the dwarf dead because I wanted to try an other tactic (3-4 unpaussed minutes later). I know, this is cheating, please be mercyful :-p
-Secondly, it is not the first time such bug appears on mantis ( http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=1597 [^] here for example). But that was for a previous version so I created a new mantis.
These things let me think this problem could be related to a save corruption. |

I think this could interest the people that face the same bug.
I successfully fix my game using reveal tools and Runesmith to kill the creature that crashes the game. In my case that was an underground undead monster, and the only notable thing about it was it was falling (despite his wings) and when it reaches the ground (20 steps later), the game crashed.
However I don't really trust memory editing tools; I will continue from my previous seasonal save instead. |

What kind of creature is the "underground undead monster"? Is it a forgotten beast? Does it have a name? |

Why was it falling in the first place? |

-Not a forgotten beast, it’s a demon. Not one of these demons released when you breach hell but a “wild” demon that is present in hell before (I haven’t beach hell in my game) Its description says:
Skeletal Snail Monster.
A gigantic hairy snail, it has thin wings of stretched skin and it has gaunt appearance, Beware its fire!
It also has only a body, a shell a right wing and a left wing, so no legs nor arms.
-I don’t know why it is falling. It is underground, there is nothing around it and it has wings… so no reason that it can’t fly.
-Yes I did some post gen modding, I wanted the genesis mod training reactions but I forget to add the new building, so I post-gen mod the reactions to use the soap maker building.
I also made some additional tests:
1)Using Runesmith to make it fall from different elevations, and yes it is always when it reach the ground that the game crash.
2)If I teleport it on the ground before it start falling there is no problem.
3)And finally, if I teleport it on the ground near goblins, when the fight start, the game crash. |

Are demons suppoused to be able to be made undead? That question can only be answered by Toady though. |
