Summary | 0000349: Animal "needs diagnosis" but never gets attended to |
Description | I had an injured war dog that, according to the health screen, needs diagnosis (keyed as "D"). (Wound was a fractured leg, IIRC - sadly that save was lost to a subsequent crash so I can't check now).
However, no-one was interested in looking at him. I had an equipped hospital zone, a kennel, and a dwarf with only healthcare plus animal training plus animal caretaking enabled, and he sat there idle and completely ignored the dog.

This happens because the issue of veterinary medicine is still in limbo. It's pretty much expected behavior, although the "Needs diagnosis" part might count as a bug. |

Why doesn't the Animal Care skill work here?
Shouldn't a Diagnostician with Animal Care also diagnose animals?
That would be preferable.
If not, then please remove the dogs from from the health screen. |

Confirmed and I second MaXMC. |

Animal Care has never worked, to the extent of my knowledge.
It's just something hat Toady's never gotten around to doing. |

Animal Care "worked" in .40d, in the sense that dwarves would generate care for animal or whatever the wording was tasks if a pet or an animal assigned to them was injured and they had the Animal Care job enabled. I'm not sure if it did anything, but they did it.
Here I'd guess the problem is either that the animals don't go to the hospital when injured, and thus cannot be diagnosed, or that animal care is still restricted to the owner of the injured animal, so they'd only get diagnosed if their owner was the chief medical dwarf. |

I think that normal doctor skills should be used (and trained) |

My observations corroborate Duckys. |

Just thought I'd throw out there that it still happens in 34.01. My poor cat with its broken legs (mining accident, that killed the miner and broke up the cat) ... |
|
|
|
Still happens. I was very surprised to see some of my semi-wild animals requesting diagnosis in the z > health screen. |
