0003732: Butchering a corpse yields only 1 skin, regardless of size
Currently, a single butchering job will never produce more than 1 "skin" item.

However, if a creature is dismembered and the pieces are large enough (generally true for forgotten beasts, elephants, and other very large animals), each body part will, when butchered, yield its own piece of skin tannable into another piece of leather.

Thus, while slaughtering a tame elephant will only yield a single piece of leather, killing a wild elephant with a squad of axedwarves and butchering all of the pieces can easily yield ten times as much leather (and roughly the same amount of everything else).

I'm pretty sure this is intentional.

It may be intentional, but it doesn't make a bit of sense. Bones and shells get divided into stacks - the same ought to happen with skins, though then leatherworking should probably get changed to use more leather.

Skin and leather are probably meant to (at least eventually) be like cloth/threads, where they get a size attribute instead of being divided into stacks. I don't think that size attribute is yet being set/respected, though.
