Summary | 0004063: Creatures often Unbutcherable |
Description | Everytime I kill a creature by some means other than a hunting dwarf or slaughtering a tame creature, I come into this problem. The dwarves grab the corpse of the creature and take it to my dump rather than my refuse piles. I try to schedule an order to Butcher a Dead Animal at the butcher shop and I get the message that it requires a nearby unrotten butcherable animal. I check the dump and the corpses are Forbidden, so I unforbid them. A stream of dwarves then comes down to get the unforbidden corpses, then drop them right back in the same place (dump) again with them listed as Forbidden again. |
Steps To Reproduce | Kill something other than by hunting or slaughtering. |

Have you tried changing (o)rders regarding refuse and corpses? |

What options should I change it to? I've told them to gather all corpses (not just Dwarf corpses) and to ignore refuse outside. |
|
|
|
I'm having this same problem. I set up a special refuse stockpile specially for butchering next to my butcher. This works perfectly fine for hunting kill returns, but if an animal dies by any other means, such as by the military or starvation, then the butcher will refuse to touch it even though it's in a stockpile a tile away and isn't forbidden. |

|
Reminder sent to: Briggs You should tell them not to auto-forbid corpses. This might not solve the problem, but it needs to be ruled out as a contributing factor. |

I'm here right now, so I'll give that a shot.
*** I just checked my Orders>Forbid screen. This is what it shows:
Claim used ammunition
Claim your dead
Claim your death items
Claim other dead
Claim other death items
So nothing should be getting forbidden.

What kind of creature is it? Very small creatures (rabbits, cavies, ducks, buzzards, and guineafowl) are almost always unbutcherable due to being too small to yield even a single unit of meat, fat, or bone. Young or small members of larger species may also sometimes be too small to butcher. And it isn't surprising that a creature that died of starvation won't be butcherable, since only tame creatures can starve. |

@ellindsey: Water Buffalo, Draltha, Crundle, Cow, Horse, etc. All things that should be butcherable. |
|
|
|
DO you have them set to Save corpses, or Dump corpses? |
