0004296: Tanzanite should occur in metamorphic layers, not gabbro.
Tanzanite is currently listed in the raws like this:

=== RAW ===
not sure about environment, so just copied peridot, which it was first confused for
[INORGANIC:TANZANITE]
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:STONE_TEMPLATE]
[MATERIAL_VALUE:20][DISPLAY_COLOR:5:7:1][TILE:15][IS_GEM:tanzanite:STP:OVERWRITE_SOLID]
[ENVIRONMENT_SPEC:GABBRO:CLUSTER_SMALL:100]
=== END RAW ===

That environment is incorrect. My research says that, "Geologically, tanzanite is found in metamorphic rocks, pegmatite rocks, and hydrothermal veins. Geographically, tanzanite is found in only one place in the world, Merelani Hills of Tanzania around Mount Kilimanjaro."

Examine inorganic_stone_gem.txt, search for tanzanite.
I recommend changing the tanzanite entry to this:

[INORGANIC:TANZANITE]
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:STONE_TEMPLATE]
[MATERIAL_VALUE:20][DISPLAY_COLOR:5:7:1][TILE:15][IS_GEM:tanzanite:STP:OVERWRITE_SOLID]
[ENVIRONMENT:METAMORPHIC:CLUSTER_SMALL:100]
[SOLID_DENSITY:3350] Range of about 3200 - 3400

For further research on colors and density, see the Density & Color suggestion:
* http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=80022.0 [^]
* http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4005 [^]

All of that data is being made available freely for any use.

The middle of the range for density was not chosen in this instance, because Google now gives me the average of several sources when I search for X "specific gravity" and that was the average given. Note also that DF's density is equivalent to specific gravity * 1000 (and specific gravity is much easier to search for, because it has only one meaning).

Doesn't that mean tanzanite should be treated like tazmanian devil's and florida panthers?

It's worth pointing out that there is such a thing as gabbro pegmatite.

Does gabbro pegmatite exist in game? There are three different theories on how pegmatites form and it seems like pegmatites themselves are associated with metamorphic regions:

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Pegmatite [^]

"Worldwide, notable pegmatite occurrences are within the major cratons, and within greenschist-facies metamorphic belts. However, pegmatite localities are only well recorded when economic mineralisation is found."

That said, feel free to contribute any other geology you find over on the forums:

Not sure when this was addressed, but it looks like these changes are already applied.
