0004365: Adv Mode slowdown and crash
0003917

So it has happened around three times now. Twice in Dwarf Fortress mode (and is the reason I started playing adventurer.. less likely to lose two hours of work. Ugh.) and now once in Adventurer mode. The only connection between crashes seems to be the terminal text; because other-wise I was doing completely different things..

I think the first crash during dwarf mode it was late spring.. 25th of some month, can't recall.. (Right around when the caravan was supposed to show up? Might have had something do with it..). The second time was also spring, but I think around the middle.

When the crash occurred in adventurer mode, I had just finished selecting the ">" command to stop while in the fast (T)ravel mode. If it made any difference, I had selected the middle of a town/river.

The text from the terminal is thus:

I don't know how to reproduce it, because the circumstances all seemed to be pretty unrelated.. It could be a matter of non-stop play-time, though.. I think for at least two of the crashes it was after around one and a half hours of non-stop playing.
The terminal text listed above is the same crash message for all three times. I tried searching for _NSAAutoreleaseNoPool() but didn't have much luck; and I'm not a very computer technical guy.. I can use the machines well, but I couldn't tell you anything about the actual parts or coding.

Anyway, Thanks for the help, eagerly anticipating some feedback that hopefully lets me play my dwarf fortress some more.

Sorry.. didn't realize I was typing that uselessness for the summary.. so, because I apparently didn't actually post what the problem was (at least not explicitly in the beginning..) the game crashes to desktop without warning.

So, it crashed again; this time towards the end of a world gen. From the gamelog I got this data:

Generating world using parameter set MEDIUM REGION
 Seed: 3841865188
 History Seed: 412095284
 Name Seed: 39537906
 Creature Seed: 3887942026

In addition to (what appeared to be) the same terminal error message as before.

Have you turned on seasonal autosaves?

Not unless it's on by default; not even sure where I'd find that. Also, the crash didn't actually occur during seasonal change as far as I recall; one of the crashes was like the 27th of granite or so, another one was around the 18th of some early/mid-spring season.

To turn on seasonal autosaves, go into your Dwarf Fortress folder, go Data, then either init.txt or d-init.txt (not sure which) and find where it says Seasonal Autosaves.

He's not saying it caused the crash, but that it's good to have backups for when these things happen.

Ah, that's true. Although at the moment I've just been save-scumming (I think.. just making back-ups?) every half month or so. Bit of a pain, but oh well.

Edit: Would it help if I grabbed the Apple Error Log as well next time it crashes?

EDIT: Welllp, happened yet again. I honestly can't figure out a connection between these crashes. Anywho, here's the Apple Error Log Text:

Hmm, so now I have a save on my adventurer where it has crashes twice consistently in ABOUT the same spot. If you'd like, I can throw up the save; there seems to be a specific set of things that happens.

EDIT: LOL. So, now that I'm not getting ahead of myself.. is there a way to upload a file directly to this site? I see an "attached files" thing on this page.

1. Exit the current building through the west door.

2. Go north, into the building already visible and kill the peasant & siege engineer inside. (I usually use strangulation on the last one left: quick as all hell wrestle, fighter, and armor use training).

3. Leave the armor shop and go east. Go into that weapon shop (entrance is on the eastern wall) and block the copper bolt headed your way.. kill the hunter, then grab his quiver, crossbow, and ever bolt in the store.

4. Exit the store, go east a short bit; you should already see a building just above a sandy clay path. Every-time I go near the building, the game seems to crash. (well, first it slows to a crawl for a second.). I also go near the down-ward ramp on my path to the building.

NOTE: As I was typing this and re-doing it, it actually didn't crash time.. although it did slow to a crawl, and during that pause I did not hold down the movement keys as I usually do.. possibility?

Note Edit: Scratch that. As soon as I finished up on this page and went back to playing, it let me strangle about twice before it crashed again. Ugh.

In the future, you can put your crash logs on http://pastebin.com/ [^] to avoid giant walls of text in the report notes.

A save would be helpful. The best place to upload is http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^]

Also, try moving your save to the latest version, 0.31.25, and see if it still crashes.

Ah, thanks much. Is the file I upload just world.sav?

Edit: Herp Derp. Well, that marks the first time I've ever compressed a file/folder in my life-time usage of computers.

Final Edit: Here's the save link. http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4070 [^]

I Lied Edit: In response to your other suggestion; no. Updating to 31.25 did not help. Still crashes incredibly consistently with the adventurer save I put up. This time it crashed even sooner; I only made it to the hunter in the weapons shop and was about to finish him off when it crashed. Don't really want to try the Dwarf Fortress mode.. too much time investment for the almost certain, but still unexpected, crash.

So, just curious, did you try the save Footkerchief? I still can't get the adventure save past that point; not sure what to do about it at this point.

Reminder sent to: James16g

Do you remember if you had TrueType enabled? I can't get this to reproduce on a windows system.

It's been forever since I played Dwarf Fortress; where do I check the True Type? Also, I have only had this happen on my Mac OS X macbook pro, so I wouldn't have any idea how it reacts on a windows OS.

Scratch that; just looked around my Dwarf Fortress files and remembered how to mess with options. And no, it looks like True Type was/is off. I remember wondering what it did, but I don't believe I ever ended up messing around with it.

Hard to know which crash this was.
