Forgot to add, should be child of 0000535, possibly related to 0000892.
I waited until Captain Meng was out of the hospital. He went back to the barracks to train, missing a weapon. His assignment list still has the sword, which is currently being held by Lor. Amthusest is still in both dwarves' assigned items list, according to the military screen.
I then went to the military screen, pressed "e"->"V", and removed Lor's weapon assignment. He promptly dropped the weapon, allowing Meng to pick it up (they were standing next to each other in the barracks).
I reassigned the uniform to Lor (which included the Individual choice, melee line) and Amthusest popped back onto his item list (but this time it was held by Meng).
I went back to Lor's equipment list, deleted Amthusest, then used "specific weapon" to assign him a bronze scimitar instead (I noticed Amthusest was the highest value sword in the list, the scimitar is somewhere in the middle). He kept sparring without a weapon. I then reapplied the uniform (which set it back to Individual choice) and Amthusest returned to his item list.
I then removed Amthusest again, then assigned a bronze shortsword that I knew was in a bin in the barracks. This time Lor picked up the shortsword properly and continued sparring.
Perhaps the game did not want to remove Amthusest from Lor's list because it is a named weapon (and thus triggered the "dwarves do not drop named weapons" clause) although Meng named it, not Lor.
I will continue to keep Lor on "specific weapon" maybe until Meng dies. Every time I go to "Individual choice, melee" he always chooses Amthusest.
