This world was generated with the advanced world gen's "Medium Island" with no changes to it. The murky pools and the lake are devoid of fish/life.

This save, a default "Medium Region", has at least one biome with pools that do generate turtles/mussels and at least one biome with pools that do not. There are three biomes total.

This save, in the same "Medium Region" world as the previous, is in a temperate area across four biomes, one of which freezes during the winter (it started frozen, then later thawed.) All of the pools across all of the biomes are yielding turtles.

This save, a third embark from that same world, is in a temperate (warm) area, across three biomes. No pools here yield anything.
There definitely is a relation, but not because there's a difference between "Islands" and "Regions". I'm pretty sure that the first three saves presented are of three different worlds, two of which are "islands" and one a "region".

There's a world that has absolutely no oceans in it (min elevation is 100), which I suppose makes it a "Region" world, where the river is producing mussels and the pool is producing turtles. (But yet again the tropical lake is void of life.) Lots of saves to work with. :P |
