What happened when you tried to mark them for slaughter? In what manner did it fail?

Reproducible on my end. The animals simply don't show up on the Z animal list, and can't be butchered from there. |
|
|
|
Hmm. Does it work if they're first removed from their cages? |

I have the same issue - you can slaughter them by using 'v'-'p' and set ready to slaughter, but they don't show up in the animals stock listing. Missing animals I have are:
hoary marmot, cougar, black bear. All 3 are wandering around my fort, and are can be slaughtered through 'v'-'p' but not through 'z'-animals. |

I noticed that (at least before the animals are bought from the Elves) that the caged animals the Elves bring show up under the units list as "Merchant". Maybe that has something to do with it. |

SL in IRC says that this happens for animals that can't be tamed. I haven't verified that myself. |
|

|
However, the unbutcherable animals I bought were listed as 'tame'. They were not possible to tame from the kennel menu - not showing up on there, even. |

I also experience this problem, where some animals show up in the animal stock listing and others do not. Tame absentees include a pair of Foxes, Warthogs, Buzzards, raccoons, and an alligator, cougar, and turtle. An untamed raccoon also fails to appear. Curiously, although all the expected domestic animals appear they are also joined by the blue jay, cardinal, and hedgehog (vermin all), but not the turtle.
Although butchering is still possible by selecting individual critters, none of the absentees can be made pets. Will see whether the presence of the Dungeon Master returns the animals to the screen.

Funny. I have 4 black bears, all show up. + 1 grizzly bear. blue jay, hedgehog are on the list, turtle is missing. All other animals I traded are missing: muskox, deer, foxes, groundhog, wolves, buzzards, rhesus macaques, elk, warthog, alligator. Animals from immigration show up fine.
Muskox roams, rest in cage. All marked tame. No change now after releasing them.

I believe this happens for animals that are exotic pets. The elves will bring them, but the exotic ones will be listed as simply, say Alligator (Tame) as opposed to Stray Alligator (Tame). |

I had the same problem with warthogs. I changed them to [PET] instead of [PET_EXOTIC] in the raws for that save and they then appeared on my Z-Animals menu. |

Taming has never worked properly, mostly due to the exotic tag. If you don't have a dungeon master on site, the tag (which seems to be more of a yes/no flag) doesn't allow you to tame exotic animals, and it doesn't allow you to use the animals list to mark them as available for pets or slaughter. The big problem with this version is that the dungeon master (and all nobles) are bugged out and either never arrive, or arrive very, very, very, very rarely. |

"The big problem with this version is that the dungeon master (and all nobles) are bugged out and either never arrive, or arrive very, very, very, very rarely."
Actually, in regards to this bug it doesn't matter if you have a Dungeon Master or not. With one in my fort my tamed Giant Desert Scorpions, Giant Jaguars, and Giant Leopards do not appear in the Animals status. The Giant Jaguars and Giant Leopards appear *after* training them as war/hunting animals but seeing as not all exotic creatures can be trained the underlying bug cannot be worked around without modding [PET_EXOTIC] -> [PET] and/or adding [TRAINABLE] in every instance. |
