Summary | 0006098: Can't build weapon trap, says "Needs item". |
Description | My mechanic canceled a weapon trap with the generic "item lost" message. Attempting to construct any weapon trap anywhere after that results in enigmatic "needs item" error (similar to the error when attempting to build in a cut-off area).
It might be related to me designating a woodcutter dwarf - probably "stole" one of the axes. If so, that's another bug. |

I have the very same bug on version 40.24. If the original poster forgot to mension that the "need item" message is displayed even before I get to choose were to put the said trap. The other kinds of trap work fine.
I had build something like 150 cage traps, and then one weapon trap with a giant axe blade, and then nothing.
Dismantling that trap did nothing.
I have several trap components and many mechanisms available and stored in piles.
From this bug my 15-ish hours game is lost. I wouldn't call this a minor bug. |

(The "severity" field is not used at all to prioritize issues, aside from crashes.)
A current save would be very helpful in this case, as replicating this bug by building 150+ traps isn't easy.

It seems I was a bit too dramatic when I said my game was broken and lost. After a while, the problem disappeared then reappeared, and so on. I studied it a bit and found out what was going on.
It all turns around the bin. It seems that, when a task exists to store an item in that bin, all items in the bin are unavailable to anything else, which seems not very logical. So the items are there, but are unavailable. I did not check if it occurred with any other kind of bins.
While the bin is the destination target of an item, you cannot order construction to be made with its content, but also, you cannot bring the bin to the trade depot (which makes sense, even if it would be preferable to make the hauling job target a new destination instead) and jobs needing these items while no other is available are canceled (in my case, smelting jobs, for which I did not understand why they were sometime canceled).
This problem occurred to me when I started a massive effort on magma smelting. I had a magma glass furnace and a few forge both producing weapon traps an a bunch of smelter taking care of the badly made weapons, among other things. And I had only one bin, hence the problem, and original report.
In the, I changed my mind, and now find the “minor” severity appropriate.
And, yes, I may be a bit slow, but I have only two weapon traps in my save (if hundreds of easy-to-make cage traps).
With this new regard on the problem, it looks a lot like this report, about coin bins and coins unavailable to smelt:

I uploaded this save as an example:

Issues with only storage being in currently hauled bin sometimes happens with gems; before multipick in 40.24 (that "Hauling jobs that used to need a held container now allow the dwarf to carry many items without a container) it was more around. |

I'm resolving this as a duplicate of 0008755 as that report covers the bin hauling tasks entirely. Please continue discussion and upload saves there. |
