0006278: Speedy giant snails.
I was playing along, and noticed an S zipping around outside my fortress. I hit [k] to go look and see what it was. It was a giant snail.

Holy crap. Snails should not move that fast, giant or no. Could be a problem with speed tags? I have a friend, Aescula, who says that speed tags didn't work for her.
Get a giant snail in view, and unpause.
Vanilla, except for a very, very minor change to the SCALE material to make it usable as leather. I don't see how it could possibly be affecting this.

The GIANT creature variation removes the SPEED tag, but doesn't add a new speed, and the giant versions of creature don't add it back in their individual raws. Not sure if there is a default SPEED or not.

I'm pretty sure SPEED defaults to 900 if not specified, and a quick look into the game's memory using DFHack confirms that giant snails have an effective speed of 900.

Perhaps the problem is that the giant snail isn't choosing a caste properly (due to the creature itself only having a single "DEFAULT" caste) - could you post a save?

Unfortunately, Quietust, all my saves got obliterated when my old computer's hard drive disc failed.

Maybe this could be recreated in the Arena or something?

I can confirm that this is fixed in 0.40.01 . I have seen a giant slug and it was super slow.
