0000666: Fighting in the air or near a ledge can leave blood spatters in midair
Air tiles can become messy with blood spatters. Has been tested and confirmed in arena mode. Not tested with other materials.

Both aerial combat and ground combat near a ledge can produce floating spatters.
Get someone to duke it out near a cliff and hope for the best.
Footkerchief: I suspect this is caused by charges that result in the victim getting shoved into open space.

Huh, 666... Number should've gone to some sort of bug regarding the new underground features.

I was running a battle of about 400 elves vs 400 humans in full adamantine armour in arena mode in part to check this, and I'm getting huge amounts of spatter in mid air well above the fight (up to the top z level, in fact).

This is because the body parts that are getting chopped off (With all the gear they are wearing, these tend to be noses, fingers, ears and such) are flying up Z levels and leaving spatter marks there (If you hover a z level or two above such a fight and watch, you'll see them appear and disappear from view. Pausing lets you examine them and see the spatter). Probably an artifact of the leave spatter as they zip along horizontally feature being applied to objects going upwards.

There are no walls near most of the fight for bouncing, so entry 838 is a duplicate of this bug, and I'll leave a note to that effect in that entry.

Pickled Tink: that's a good test case for 0000838, but I'm not convinced it has the same cause as this issue does. I'll leave both open.

The "pushed into open space" suspicion doesn't appear to hold water. Testing in the arena with two critters fighting on a single-tile-wide wall indicated that spatters would appear in the spaces adjacent to those who were fighting, just like it does on the ground. Nobody had gone flying through that particular tile.

Not sure whether i should open new ticket.
I was trying to fight contamination and applied approach which worked in 40d: made channels and putted grates over them.
So I've got 3 issues.
1. Blood and other contaminants now are tracked across the grate.
2. Removing the grate leaves all the contaminants just hanging in the air.
3. Dorfs fall through stairs if you remove grate while they stand on it. I had 20-levels staircase below the grate, and armorer fell to the very bottom.

^^^ I'm not sure whether 1 is a bug or not. I'd recommend a new ticket for 2, making mention of 1.

3 probably deserves its own report, and has two potential bugs. The first bug is a different form of this one:

# 001069 □ [dwarf mode][jobs][building construction and destruction] (Report) bridge demolishing dwarves allow their buddies to fall through

The second potential bug is falling through a series of up/down stairs. Toady's comment suggests that this may be unintended behavior: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=19479.msg202209#msg202209 [^]

Shooting at flying units (vultures in my case) leaves blood spatters midair as well. I'm building floor tiles and just noticed some of them without construction initiation are already red.

flying and shooting are not necessary. I've got blood spatter in air tiles above my main entry hall.

Could be from my traps, could also be from the rare moments when I sent soldiers down the hall to clean up wounded goblins. With the traps working I don't send troops down this hall at all, I instead use water to flood the room and wash everything down below to a killing room. I have no marksdwarves. Strictly sword/axe here.

dfcleanmap and waited for a fresh siege.

After a single battle, I've got 19 tiles of open space with blood on them. I have no marksdwarves. My entire army consists of 30 dwarves who are all dual wielding melee weapons. Many of these dwarves are legendary fighters.

The battle occurred in a three wide hallway with open space above, and the majority of the blood splatter is focused around the initial engagement area when my dwarves first met the enemy. 16 of the 19 tiles of open space spatter are found here. the remaining 3 are further down the hallway where my dwarves cut down the stragglers of the routing goblin army.

On a side note, I now have blood spatter to play with. I've turned on dwarves tracking blood around, so I'll see what happens there.

Arena mode testing shows that blood splatters in midair can be left by flying creatures if they are bleeding from any wound. As they move, their path can be traced by the midair blood they leave.

Not really sure if it warrants its own bug report or not, but I also just noticed that if you disembowel a flying creature their guts will trail around in mid-air as well.

The gutless goose in question is currently lying down in thin air, which is an oddity unto itself...

This also happens with vomit. One of my marksdwarves just took out a kea man with two shots. The first one hit him in the gut and he left vomit in midair.

I can confirm this bug is still present in 40.01. I have stork vomit floating in open space in fortress mode after the stork got done smashing into things as birds seem wont to do in this release.

Still happening in 44.12.

Had a dwarf fall & get injured while digging out a water cistern, walls of cistern became covered with blood. Then, on filling the cistern with water, blood was washed into four void tiles (or may have been there already). Drained the cistern, cleaned the walls, refilled - and the exact same four tiles are still bloody. Drained again, Constructed a scaffold out into the open space - scaffold tiles become bloody. Dwarves clean. Refill. No more blood.
