I've gotten this in several different situations, not just sieges. When I first embarked, I pressed Tab until the fortress filled most of the screen, with the options and commands on the rightmost third or so. Pressing Tab once more makes the fortress view fill the entire screen, that seems to work, but pressing Tab one MORE time crashes the game.
