Summary | 0007099: Some plants apparently not able to be processed/process fruit reaction not working. |
Description | In a fortress, I have a fairly large stockpile of plants. Most of these plants I also have seeds of, through various processing means, but a few appear to be completely unprocessable. As a test, I've shut down all farms except one (the pig tail farm, because that's not the problem in this case) to see if I can get them processed. However, looking at one of the plants, I see that a: it has multiple parts and b: one of those parts is a fruit. However, despite having available jugs and plenty of the plant in question, the reacion "process fruit to ..." in the screw press remains red. |
Steps To Reproduce | Start a fortress
Gather outdoors plants
Process plants and see if there are any that cannot be processed. |
Additional Information | Still working on seeing if this is a bug or just me not being able to work the system, but I think there may be at least one thing broken here. Dunno if it's the fruit reaction or the fact that the plants have multiple parts, though. |

Which plants exactly have this bug? |
|
|
|
*Checks his stocks*
Bambara groundnut plants have a fruit component to their raw file, not processable.
Pepper Plants
Squash Vines
Winter Mellon Vines
Pineapple plants.
All five appear to not be processable, and the first was the one I was referring to when I wrote this up. |

Grape Vines seem unprocessable as well. |
|
|
|
Thanks qq!
That makes six plants that appear to be unable to be processed. Does anyone have any others? |
|
|

Actually, I think I know what the problem could be:
Dwarves appear to use the same pick-up-plant mechanic from back when all plants were one-material and a seed. As such, they pick up whole (and unprocessable) plants rather than only the parts of the plant they should (the melons, the grapes, etc).
Just my hypothesis, I could be entirely wrong. |

Add muskmelons to the list. Muskmelon vines produce more muskmelon vines, not muskmelons themselves. |

Ran into something similar with Eggplants, although they don't have any reactions, but could not be eaten, and can't see them in the kitchen view.
I tried renaming the name of the base plant to differ from the name of the fruit, and the name of the plant in my food stockpile changed as well, so it seems to be the issue mentioned of them gathering the whole plant instead of just the fruit.
I was able to rig the function "Process to Bag" to extract fruits from it, and once it finished, the product of it worked normaly, getting eaten and producing seeds, only the new plants you grow with them has the same issue.
I noticed the strawberries has the edible tags in both the fruit part and the base plant part, but only the reaction code in the fruit part, it might mean they're edible, but without a working reaction, till you can somehow get the fruit. |

My guess is that someday we'll have a reaction that gives us all the growths, not just the fruit. That would make the "have to process to get the fruit so you can get seeds to get something to process again to get fruit" problem less redundant - as you would then get something edible raw for seeds as well as leaves and flowers and other byproducts.
If this is the case we're just missing the proper reaction, until then you can go through and make most of the garden vegetables have
"[ITEM_REACTION_PRODUCT:BAG_ITEM:PLANT_GROWTH:FRUIT:LOCAL_PLANT_MAT:FRUIT]"
or hearts, leaves, bulbs, etc. depending on the plant and then you can process the raw plant into something edible - beans on the other hand you'd need to add a process for each bean to get seeds out of the pod, or make the pods edible. Or process their seeds into bags with bag processing and then cook the seeds en masse (but you deal with the 200 seed limit) |

Probably don't need a save for this one, but if anyone has one, please upload it - just to show it isn't a stockpile/barrel/burrow related bug. |

It's a .40.03 save, but I can confirm it still happens in .05: it's just those saves aren't on my current computer.
There are some muskmelon vines in a barrel that are unprocessable by any means.

This bug can be closed, Toady got around to allowing most things to be processed. I think he said bean plants are still a problem, but he knows of it's existence and has chosen to delay it. At this point, I think it's less of a bug and more of an unadded feature. |
