0007433: Goblins climb out of pits
Evidently goblins have mastered the climbing skill too!

Pits, formerly one of the mainstays of my fortress defence, and an integral component of more complex traps, are no longer an obstacle to those cunning invaders. When dropped into pits (by bridges opening under them, for example) they just climb right out again!

They even scale smooth walls.
Smooth walls seem to offer no resistance to climbing. An overhang does seem to provide an insurmountable obstacle, so long as it's at least one z-level above the ground (that is, the following layout does seem to prevent climbing:

XX
XX
X
X
XXXXXX

If the overhang is closer to the ground then the goblins seem to be able to jump up to the next level and start climbing.

Are the smooth walls natural or constructed? Natural smooth walls are the only kind that isn't supposed to be climbable.

These were constructed smooth walls.

I would have thought that intentionally smoothed walls would be harder to scale than natural ones?

No, the list is rough, built, smoothed.

Ah - I assumed that by "constructed" you meant using the designate for smoothing command. These were created by smoothing natural stone, not by building walls, if that's the difference there (I was wondering where would one get "natural" smoothed walls).

Here's the relevant devlog: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_2013.html#2013-08-04 [^]
"I also went back and did a few climbing issues still on the table -- there is a climbing skill now, and things like constructed block walls are harder to climb than constructed rough walls (smoothed natural walls can't be climbed at all, at least while we are still dealing with tool-less people)."

So yeah, if they're climbing smooth natural walls, that's a bug. Please upload a save that demonstrates the problem to http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^] and post the link here.

About "one of the mainstays of my fortress defense":

"01/18/2014 Toady One I mentioned in the last FotF reply that non-player climbing and jumping were still open questions and that I'd have to try them out before I knew how much we'd have this time around. That was today's project, and it looks we'll be having them both. This includes dwarf mode, so you might have to rethink certain defensive decisions you've been making. (...)"

:) I'm dreaming of walls topped with spikes/glass/flint. I guess it's too much to hope for concertina wire.

On the bright side, climbers don't seem to be able to climb fortifications (they shows up as "Empty Space"), at least in the OTArena.

Didn't get a save. Assuming the walls were not smooth natural walls.
