0007482: Siegers wander off. Siege tag persists, but loss of the fortress doesn't reward site to the besiegers.
In Losing is !!Magic!! (a /My Little Pony/ mod for DF 0.40.03), I had a siege in the first year. (This is a separate bug, but one that's already been brought up.) Two groups of changelings (roughly goblins for gameplay purposes) arrived, one shortly after the other; the first was about four changelings, the second about six, and I had the distinct impression that two sites had teamed up to send a full squad at me.

One of these groups wandered off the map like migratory animals do; I managed to kill one member of the other group, and the rest ran away.

But even with no siegers present, the siege continued. "SIEGE" still showed in the upper left corner, no migrants or caravans arrived, and the "Retire Fort" option remained replaced by "Succumb to Invasion".

I had this happen with both games of Losing is !!Magic!! which I've played with 0.40.03. In the previous one, I lost my fort while the siege tag was present but all invaders were gone, and got "Your fortress has crumbled to its end" -- I was even able to reclaim it!
Start a fortress (you may need to be near to an enemy race) and play normally. Survive the first-year siege without killing or capturing all of the enemy. Wait for the rest of the enemy to run or wander off, and note how the Siege tag isn't removed.
I don't know if this happens with the standard game or not. I tried to verify, but got a crash just after my initial un-pausing the fortress, so I'm going to stick to Losing Is !!Magic!! until vanilla gets a little more stable.

Reminder sent to: exottoyuhr

Are you 100% sure all the siegers left the map? There weren't any in a tree somewhere (or hanging from a wall)? None appeared on the (u)nits screen?

Absolutely sure; there were no enemies on the Units screen. I'll upload screenshots of this bug as manifested; I can also provide the savefile and the objects directory I'm using, if you need them.

I found out some more things about this bug:
1. With "SIEGE" + no enemies present, choosing "Succumb to the Invasion" has the effect of choosing "Retire Fort" -- giving the display "your fortress has settled into day-to-day life". The fort shows up as currently inhabited (by my civilization) and available to resume on the Reclaim list.
2. When I retire and reclaim, this happened again. I may have even been hit by an empty siege, since I got "A vile force of darkness has arrived!", headed to the Units screen very shortly after, and found no enemies.
3. These have apparently been discussed on the forums -- "bandit sieges". 0006972 may be a relative of this.

(Update: What should I do to attach files? Will delete this once I know; Dwarfu, could you send me an e-mail?)

Please upload to http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^] and post the link here.

Have you seen this problem in vanilla? Your mods might be broken.

Saves (and screenshots) uploaded at http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9072. [^]

As I mentioned above ("Additional Information"), I tried to reproduce this in a vanilla game, but gave up in disgust when the vanilla game crashed pretty much the moment I unpaused. People may be experiencing this in vanilla, though -- AlfeG, in 7417, might have had this happen to him.

Update: Got the game to run past the initial startup, but I think I'd have to be more used to playing dwarves than I am in order to survive that initial clash. This is doubly true given how 'off' combat prioritization is in 40.03: over-prioritizing kicking is really good for ponies, but not so good for dwarves...

Has anyone playing dwarves seen this?
