Summary | 0008293: Dwarves not using bins |
Description | I have about 50 bins made, and they just go straight to furniture stocpiles and are never touched again. they are all accessible, and now it is getting to the point where I have all my stockpiles set up and full, and not a single bin is used. I have furniture hauling on, and for the settings, i have max bins turned all the way up, and they will still not use it. |

What kind of items are in the stockpiles?
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Bin [^]
"Stockpiles that use bins are ammo, armor, bars/blocks, cloth, coins, finished goods, gems, leather and weapons. Food stockpiles use barrels and large pots instead of bins. Other stockpiles do not use anything at all." |

i have stockpiles for everything, but no bins used, except for those from trading |

Sometimes bins work as well as they ever do. Sometimes dwarves seem very reluctant to use them. If I spot a clear case, I'll upload a save. :) |

Got one (Phoebus' Graphics Set save)

The 'bar/blocks' stockpile was changed just after creation to allow one bin. As you can see the dwarves have filled it up with blocks, but not used a bin, even though there are seven empty bins in the furniture stockpile.
After I changed it to allow the full number of bins they started to use them. |

The one bin you've allocated is indeed in the stockpile (a saguaro rib bin in the upper left corner). The only bug I see here is that your dwarves placed an additional block on the tile with the bin, "hiding" it.
Also, a bookkeeper would be quite useful for identifying if bins have been assigned to your stockpiles (on the "bins" details screen, bins assigned to a stockpile will show the stockpile's number). |

Oops! False positive then. |

@Tom013:
You've reserved 25 of your 13 bins for use in jobs that require a bin (e.g. "process plant to bin"), none of which exist in vanilla. Removing your reservation (in the stockpile menu) caused your dwarves to immediately start collecting crafts in the no-longer-reserved bins.
You also apparently assigned a bin to several furniture stockpiles, despite there being no binnable furniture. |

@Loci:
Ah, well that explains that. Thanks! Sorry for the (extra) false alarm.
(The 1 bin assigned to furniture was me futzing with things trying to figure out why I couldn't get bins elsewhere) |
