Summary | 0008485: Companions randomly and periodically stop for no apparent reason and refuse to move |
Description | Well, reproducibility is always because it happens repeatedly and random because well, random.
As I was travelling SW through the mountains, I noticed that my dwarf and human companions (more often the human companions) would periodically just stop for no reason and refuse to follow. When I ask about feelings, they just say things along the lines of 'the battle rages' and 'I cannot just stand by', at the same time, they show no obvious states of distress.
Also, at earlier points when I was trying to get a good savepoint, I noticed that there seems to be some "succession traveler placed out of bounds" errors associated with it as in that they were appearing at the same time. However, in more recent attempts, those errors stopped. So, I'm not sure if there's a connection or just a coincidence. |
Steps To Reproduce | http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9991 [^]
Keep walking SW (which is simply the direction I'm travelling in) and the two human companions and the dwarf companion will soon (within 30 seconds) stop for no reason and refuse to follow. |

Oh, forgot to add that my elf companion never does this behavior.
Edit: Also, if you wait nearby and keep pressing '.', the elven companion will either sink into depression or go into a tantrum. She actually had a bit of an issue with that early on, but I thought she got over it.
Edit2: You may have to try more than once since at least one time, they didn't get stuck.
Edit3: With a bit of testing, I've found that if you disturb the nearby king snake (not neccesarily attack, just scare it), they'll snap out of whatever deadlock is happening.
Edit4: That elf went into depression soon after the kingsnake got killed, not sure if psychological issues or just being an elf. Also, waiting/sleeping and possibly fast travel resets that depression state, which may or may not itself be a bug.
Edit5: And they're periodically doing that as I travel southwest. It's really annoying and companions definetly didn't do this before.
Edit6: Btw, my mace lord dwarf companion ABSOLUTELY LOVES to kill keas every chance she gets, and buzzards too, plus kingsnakes.
Edit7: I'm leaning towards psychological issues with the elf companion....

Here's one of the same game, just much later and with a bunch of new companions.
This time, I'm traversing a large flat plateu, so it's probably easier to monitor. Just go in any direction really.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9997 [^]
Also, I've noticed that I seem to be getting the "succession traveler placed out of bounds" error more commonly than usual and I'm seeing it again while crossing the mountains and deep in the mountains.
I've also noticed that they'll also pause and not move for a brief time after killing stuff (keas at least), but that seems like less of a bug than stopping for no apparent reason.

It seems to have stopped in 40.15, but I'm inconclusive on that atm. |

They aren't doing the random pause for no apparent reason anymore, so, could someone close this?
My guess is that the stress thing firing too fast in adventure mode was causing the companions to lock up or something.
They'll still do the brief pause after killing stuff, but that only lasts a few seconds at most and I suspect that behavior may be normal. That bit isn't what this bug report is about though.

Apparently I had spoken too soon.
After I had gotten a vampire into the party, they started doing the bug again, though I didn't really notice it until I got the eliete spearman vampire. Though I've noticed that it's not as severe as before, as in it doesn't trigger as often, or maybe it's just the location.
I've also noticed that I've been getting a bunch of 'succession traveller out of bounds' errors since I got the vampire into the party.
Edit: I just realized that I actually have two vampires in the party. Going to do some analysis testing soon.

Here is the save point that I'm using to test this (40.15), you can go pretty much anywhere, however I'm on the eastern edge of the mountain range. Theres a nice big, flat area just west which makes observation easier.:
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10060 [^]
The two vampires are Thuthu and Oku (spearmaster and lasher, repsectively), I checked my other companions in legendsviewer and these two are the only vampires in the group.
Test1, no vampires in group: Behavior described earlier does not occur. They still do the 'stopping after killing stuff' behavior still happens a bit, but it's still very brief.
Test2, only vampire lasher in group: Vampire periodically and randomly, sometimes in association with nearby mobs, usually keas, but it happens with no mobs within non-vampire sight as well. The 'stopping after killing stuff' thing is more pronounced and they tend to wait longer. No 'succession traveller' errors observed.
Test3, only spearmaster vampire in group: Same behavior as shown in test2. No 'succession traveller' errors observed. Though I've had those in previous tests. Also, the lasher vampire didn't even move from where I left her in the mountains.
test4, both vampires in group (group as is basically): Both vampires are doing the buggy behavior and it's only the vampires that are doing it.
Looks like vampires reacting to underground and inaccessable mobs is going to have to be tweaked even further.

Hm, there might be more to this than just vampires because right now, all of my companions, none of whom are vampires, are standing still and refusing to move. They've already been stuck for about a minute as of the save.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10088 [^] Move around, they refuse to move or otherwise follow, I did not give them a 'stay put' request.
Using sneak, I notice that there is a giant kea a little to the NE and 23 z levels up.
Edit: When I scared off the giant kea (just walk right below it), the companions snapped out of whatever loop was happening.

I'm just noting that demon companions are affected by this as well. In this case, it's an eyeless demon. |
