Summary | 0009517: Plump helmet men try to become necromancers |
Description | A fairly simple bug. Plump helmet men have [CAN_LEARN] and [LOCAL_POPS_PRODUCE_HEROES], leading to the poor blighters occasionally trying to mend their mortality. Alas, necromancy requires [CAN_SPEAK], which plump helmet men lack. Not realizing this, they will seek out towers (or perhaps claim slabs, though I've yet to see this,) where they will begin and complete apprenticeships. Now, the remarkable part of this is that, in spite of the futility of their actions, they are not only accepted as members of necromancer communities (where they remain till their death,) but can teach the secrets of life and death to others (not bad for blind-mutes!) |
Steps To Reproduce | Generate a world and look at the history of any towers. If the world is large and old enough, chances are you'll have at least one plump helmet man wannabe necromancer.
For a more reliable means of reproducing the bug, remove the [CV_ADD_TAG:CAN_SPEAK] from the animal person variation template, as animal man necromancers seem fairly frequent. |
Additional Information | The broader implication of this is that IT_REQUIRES tokens are ignored, when it comes to creatures seeking out secrets. While that might be considered realistic, in some cases, it feels like the sort of thing that the raws should elaborate on (presumably through the use of [REQUIREMENTS_KNOWN] token, or somesuch.) |

Glancing through plump helmet historical figures, I've got a few who are skilled conversationalists, comedians, negotiators, etc. One even has the amusing line in legends "In the Midwinter of 8, Nastrip of the Infinite Lies created the position of lord through force of argument".
So, either plump helmet worldgen is bugged, or the bug is that plump helmets are supposed to be able to speak. |
|
|
|
The lack of speech seems to be intentional. Otherwise, I imagine they'd have [INTELLIGENT], instead of just [CAN_LEARN]. |

Intentional yes, but this was done back before plump helmet men could becomes anything more than cavern wildlife. Now the problem is likely a case of "didn't consider whether it warrants changing" rather than "decided it should remain this way"
See the earlier issue of gorlaks originally lacking the ability to open doors. |
