Has anyone seen stationary instruments used in Fortress mode, either? I haven't, but I have bad luck with music.
(I have seen handheld instruments used, though.)

I haven't seen ANY instrument used. That's probably because the tavern chest contains 10 of two kinds of instruments they don't use (the two kinds requiring only a single piece, thus the ones produced first), they're not interested in the stationary ones I've built, and the other kinds of instruments produced later have been "randomly" sent to the various temples' chests. They simulate a number of instruments in the tavern, but not the ones present there.
AFAIK, there is no reasonable way to stock the tavern with a range of instruments. |

The bard here is playing (grabbed the ss at the wrong flashing cursor) the instrument, interestingly when they did play it the other two didn't line up right beside them like you normally see, instead standing over where they are to the side.

Ive seen stationary instruments used, handheld ignored... also the other way around. I dont know if it helps, but I pay attention to what instruments the performances use and forbid the others so they dont end up being hauled to the tavern. |

Since reporting, I have found a stationary instrument planted as furniture that I was able to use, even though I had no skill in percussion. But those are scarce, and hardly practical for an adventurer. I've only been able to use the ones in my hands by removing the 'as building' requirement with dfhack. |

In that case, it seems likely that this isn't a bug, just a missing feature (adventurers can't build buildings) which 42.07 will be adding. |
