Summary | 0009653: Tavern keeper/performers repeatedly serve alcohol until visitors and even dwarves drink themselves to death |
Description | over the last 2-3 month there have been 3 alcohol-related deaths in my fortress. the first one was a goblin bard so i thought this may be because he wasnt used to it, but the last victim was a dwarf citizen.
im not even sure this is actually a bug as its kinda nice from a flavor perspective, just maybe a bit extreme? or maybe my 2 tavern keepers serve double drinks to the same people?

The drinking to death issue is intended, but might not be properly tuned (yet). You can avoid this by not having any personnel (including performers) in the tavern.
It is thought non dwarves are more susceptible to alcohol poisoning than due to a dwarven oversized liver. However, dwarves are certainly not immune. It is thought some traits (possibly slow healing, disease susceptibility) increases the risk. Also, immoderate drinkers should be at a higher risk as well. |
Performers and tavern keeper assigned to tavern will serve alcohol continuously as long as there's a stockpile in tavern. I don't think it's working as intended. |
Tavern keepers that walk at a fast pace are more likely to over-serve by executing the action too quickly before moving onto the next patron & then restarting the cycle. Additional tavern staff (bugged performers etc.) also start the same serving cycle at a different interval meaning that sometimes dwarves have second servings in the same 'round' one staff member after another.
Unnatural non-dwarf tavern keepers that walk at a slow pace (the movement rate of a ogre is perfect) are often more effective |

I'm playing 0.44.10 and I can't have more than a single barrel of alcohol and one tavern keeper in my tavern otherwise I have a couple of dead dwarves and many brawls/tantrums. My fort has 250 people 20 of them being humans and the only ones getting drunk until they die or brawl are always the dwarves, never the humans living there or visitors.
Even with just one single barrel in that tavern that is full of dwarves I'll still have one or two brawls/tantrums.
I'm playing with fastdwarf 2 0 because otherwise it would be too slow, that may make it worse but still, 2 barrels of booze for maybe 40 dwarves and in less than an ingame day I have 4 to 5 dead and 10 fights.
On the other hand those same dwarves have access to more than 2000 drinks of 10 different alcohols at every time in the drinks stockpiles outside the tavern and can drink at will with no ill effect.

No longer present on 47.03 since the changes to self-regulated needs means that the barkeeper spots any dwarves without (dwarves fufill the need easily sustaining thirst and dwarves beeline to preferable booze themselves for fufillment) a full need to have drank recently and gives them a drink of alcohol from in the zone.
This motivates tavern keepers more towards serving arriving visitors alcohol instead until their empty needs are met, making them more loose lipped about sharing rumors as intended game function. Pretty much fixed. |

@FantasticDorf: Maybe it's just me, but I didn't understand your note. How has the handling of needs changed, again? |
@Huntthetroll When a dwarf has fufilled a need, they cease the activity they are casually (green) or seriously (purple until finished) engaging in as part of the apparent stress tweaks in 47.03. A easy example is that they will intensely read stocked books until their related needs are full then linger around with 'no job' in a library if they have nothing better to do or other immediate needs in other locations to attend.
With a tavern keeper i was expressing that the need fufillment is non-selfish and they read the needs of other dwarves to engage in their role and apply the correct amount of alcohol (with only a little bit of vomit), performers may be similar to please a crowd's needs but i have not looked into it. |

I understand now. Thanks for the clarification! |

v0.47.03: I embarked, slapped down a tavern zone (with a wood chest and cups), assigned 5 tavernkeepers, and had a dead dwarf in less than a month. |

Kind of a different issue really. "Multiple tavern keepers will all try to meet dwarves needs thereby killing them". Let's not forget that alcohol poisoning is a feature, not a bug. It's the excessiveness of deaths that's the issue. You can achieve one dead dwarf in a month with a booze pile and no tavern keepers too. |

Are you sure about that? Because I couldn't really tell who they were serving, and opted not to assume I knew what was happening. What I *do* know is that I've never had one of the starting seven spontaneously drop dead of alcohol poisoning in a year, let alone a half-month, without assistance.
Even if you are right, I don't think "too many tavernkeepers => dead dwarves" is desired behavior. A large fort could easily need several tavernkeepers, and on the odd occasion where nearly everyone is out hauling crap around, the few remaining dwarves too important for menial labor are subject to random death in the tavern. |
Alcohol can't be prohibited from being favored to drink compared to water so the function of the tavern keeper in a well supplied dwarf fortress capable of drinking from stockpiles themselves is minimal. Single tavern keepers are very unlabored catering almost exclusively to guests who have not drunk then stop receiving a drink for a while after being served, and dwarves who have let thier needs through excessive activity in the zone (dancing, playing instruments beginning to end) so i am certain about the credibility of the tavern keeper's need-sniping role. |
Logistically less than just seperate tavern-locations (with 1 keeper each) is required since multiple dwarves can pile onto the same tile without obvious complaint unless animals butt-in, without all dwarves also simultaneously attending meaning a small tavern stays viable for a long while without expansion and the keeper is never busy enough to need a replacement.
Not having enough tavern-hands assuming two keepers could not step over each other and over-inebriate with [10]units of booze to the same unit with a drink need, would mean at worst; dwarves might time out the thirst counter anyway then go to the alcohol stockpile to refill themselves without keeper-input or miss a opportunity for a visitor to share rumors after being plied with drink. |

A dwarf of mine recently died to poisoning in a single tavern split across two areas with 1 tavern keeper assigned. Death items are fobidden by 'O'rders of the mug & the dwarves clothes confirming they were holding it and they are lying in their own vomit.

Additional details are that by the virtue of a tangental exploit, i can look into the last thoughts of a dead dwarf through the relationship screen and Meng Lashedsyrup had last been enjoying his inebriation after he had suffered a major injury (likely to his lungs) and been drinking previously a favorite kind of dwarven ale & has a short-term rewards type personality possibly creating a perfect storm.
