Summary | 0001126: Treated wounds don't fully heal, doctors don't remove stuck-ins
Description | So some of my dwarves had bad things happen to them, they went to the hospital and got fixed up (and everything seemed to work fine). However, some of them are never actually healing fully. For example, one is a child who had a broken shoulder, wrist, and had his throat strangled for a while. 3 years later his shoulder/wrist are still yellow, his throat is brown, and he's still got the sutures in (though the splints and dressings are gone). Another is a soldier who took a goblin axe to the leg. He got stitched up and a splint put on - 5 years later he's still walking with the splint and a yellow leg (though the sutures and dressing are gone). He's even got some variation of 'heals extremely fast', but obviously not.
Steps To Reproduce | mangle some dwarves treat them watch some never heal all the way
Additional Information | skin injuries in particular never seem to heal no matter what. I've got several soldiers with brown injuries which are listed like: right foot, skin --- throat, skin --- left cheek, skin --- right cheek, skin In many of the cases, even though the wounds have not actually healed the preferences screen lists some wicked scars.

Seconding this one. I've actually never seen a treated injury heal. It either doesn't need a treatment and heals itself, or it gets treated and never heals. |

Treated injuries lasting 3 years and running so far. Sutures are still in, affected areas still showing yellow on the wounds screen. Broken nose not treated at all and still red after 3 years. The dwarves are up and about, just not healing. |

Not really a glitch, check the dwarfs description screen, it should list scars on those yellow and brown body parts. And scars count as wounds somewhat, a serious muscle wound will scar over to yellow (inhibited) while a small skin wound will heal up to brown (minor) I guess this a feature or something as I doubt a seriously broken bone will heal up COMPLETELY without function loss even with medical treatment. |

well, this happens with my militia commander..he was ok for a few years despite the red wounds, running around killing things, then he started to show his status as pale - There is no infection listed, no bloddloss, and nothing in the combat logs. I think there may be a serious bug in course. |

@Toybasher: Unless modern medical techniques are applied, but even then, there may still be problems. |

I think there may be a serious bug in course. He might have gotten a training wound, did you check his wounds screen and his sparring log? |

yes, like I said nothing in the logs. He hadnt a wound for two years. He endf succumbing from infection, but there was none in his health screen or in the health overview. Strangely, I hadnĀ“t an artifact mood for at least five years, and few after he died I got one. |

yes, like I said nothing in the logs. You said there was nothing in his combat log. I asked about the sparring log because they're two different things. He hadnt a wound for two years. He endf succumbing from infection, but there was none in his health screen or in the health overview. Wounds don't show up in the medical screens until a doctor diagnoses them. Did you check his v -> Wounds screen and his personal description? |
(0010761) thvaz (reporter) 2010-07-20 18:31 |
there was no sparring logs. And yes, I checked every screen. He was wounded, but these wounds were treated, and nowhere showed he got an infection. |

I think it counts as "showed he got an infection" when infection showed up as the cause of death. Do you have a save from before he died? |
(0010763) thvaz (reporter) 2010-07-20 18:42 |
to make it clearer: they were treated but never really healed. Maybe an issue with the skill of the doctor? |
(0010765) thvaz (reporter) 2010-07-20 18:52 |
I cant upload a save, Im posting from my mobile. I hope at least to show there are still serious issues with the health care. Just now I noticed the doctors arent removing stuck in bolts and arrows. The wound remain open even after treated. Ok. Checked the save. My militia commander had stuck in bolts too. But still no signal of an infection apart the pale status. |

An infection has no other signs. They will turn pale and look as if they are dying from regular blood loss, but when they die it will show as an infection. I had this happen to a dwarf, he had all the wounds and wasn't getting any treatment, i thought it was a bug and that my doctors were bastards but it turned out he died from an infection, not hemorrhaging. |
(0010781) thvaz (reporter) 2010-07-21 08:38 edited on: 2010-07-21 18:17 |
So the infection just show in the health screen if a doctor diagnosed the dwarf. Anyway, I still think there is a bug, at least related with stuck in bolts that aren't removed. Edit:if you unforbid the stuck bolts and design it to dump, a dwarf will take it from the wounded.though it will wound it a bit further, he will then start to heal the wounded. Should I open a new report? |
(0011010) Footkerchief (manager) 2010-07-25 14:12 |
A new report probably isn't needed, but a save might be helpful. |
(0011238) JimboOmega (reporter) 2010-07-29 05:35 |
I have several dwarves who have spent most of their fortress lives in the hospital. They won't receive treatment for multiple red wounds, and often alternate between being infected and not. It seems like once an infection sets in, the dwarf is doomed to the condition forever, regardless of whether or not he overcomes the infection. With casting impossible without jumping through major hoops, this happens fairly often =\. Not sure if it's a stuck in issue - I may make a separate bug report later. |

This still exists. I have a fortress in the current version with the problem, actually, and will upload soon. Doctors can't remove stuck-in bolts. Edit: Here's the save. https://www.dropbox.com/s/z2xhzliq2uifs81/gear2.zip [^] |
