Summary0001198: Processing coke "Need refined fuel to complete this operation"
DescriptionI started bringing one coke with me to start my smelting operation. When the FO finished smelting the first one someone was TSK'd to move it to a stockpile. I had 4 coke sitting in the Smelter inventory all TSK'd. Once someone came and moved it to the stockpile I could restart the process.

This is quite annoying but happens a lot. Either have more coke so that not all is Tasked at once or disable coke in your stockpile settings so it doesn't get hauled.

Forbid then Claim removes task from an item so it can be used without waiting.

"need refined fuel..." just means you need more charcoal or coke. (or a magma furnace).

But you're saying this has to do with objects on the forge tasked for hauling that aren't moved yet?

Are you burning coke to make coke?

Once you have a large enough "buffer" of coke sitting in stockpiles that your haulers can store the newly produced coke before the old stuff is used up, this shouldn't happen anymore. An item actively tasked for "Store item in stockpile" cannot be used for *anything* else until said task is completed or cancelled.

@DoctorZuber I had to check on the DF wiki too, but yes, you do have to use coke/charcoal to make coke from raw coal. http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Fuel#Coke.2C_from_bituminous_coal_or_lignite [^]

I'm leaning toward marking this "no change required," but it may be inconsistent with the way other jobs are handled, I'm not sure.

I dunno, it seems consistent to me. The same thing happens with any other production chain where one steps output is the next steps input. It's just more noticeable with a smelter on repeat since everything is going through the same building, rather than say, your clothier running out of cloth because the last unit is still being hauled out of the loom.

I didn't need to check the wiki. I understood the process. He doesn't specify but from what he's saying I'm assuming he's not using a magma smelter, he's using a regular smelter so he needs fuel. That means charcoal or coke.

I'm assuming he's using coke, which explains everything. His haulers want to put it in a stockpile. Once it's tasked up for that, it can't be touched until it gets there. If all he has is four coke it's not at all surprising that his job at the smelter is being interrupted by hauling jobs. This is all expected behavior.

Oh one more important question, how much coke do you have?

Ah. I thought you meant something else because Rafal pretty much covered that in the first post.

To answer DoctorZuber's question that was all of my coke(four pieces).

right, that pretty well flags this as expected behavior. I vote to close it.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward calling this expected behavior.

I'm reopening this because RossM pointed out that 0000867 is pretty similar, which may point to a general problem in how jobs get queued.
