Summary | 0003922: Military dwarves won't use/equip bolts brought via the embark screen
Description | Exactly what it says on the can. Note that hunters WILL equip the ammo normally.
Steps To Reproduce | Embark with at least a crossbow, a quiver, and a decent amount of bolts. Turn any one of your dwarves into a squad and make sure he equips any of the ranged weapons you brought. Notice how he'll never equip any of the bolts you brought along, no matter how many you assign to him in the military screen.
Additional Information | This holds true for any types/combinations of crossbows and ammo; copper, steel, iron... This holds true for any type of military squads/units; custom squads, archers, leather/mail users... Dumping and reclaiming the bolts has no effect. Any bolts constructed via crafters or bought off traders will be equipped normally. Again, only dwarves with the hunter profession seem to be able to equip the ammo normally. Additional note: Making a dwarf pick up the ammo by assigning him the hunter profession and then turning it off again, and drafting him into the military, will cause him to drop his equipment and re-equip the quiver without the bolts inside of it. Additional note addendum: Setting to dwarf to an inactive, ranged, squad and giving him the hunter profession causes him to drop his equipment and not hunt at all it seems.

Verified ammo assignment is working correctly in v0.43.03. Note that ammo is assigned in the order shown on the ammunition screen. By default the top slot on the ammunition screen reserves the fortress's first bolts for "Hunters". Adding an assignment for a military squad will not supersede the Hunters assignment, and if you do not have enough bolts to fulfill the Hunters' quota then your military will not receive any. If you clear the Hunters reservation, the bolts will be free for assignment to the next squad in the ammo assignment list. |
