Is this an unfortunate implication of the burrow system? Dwarves don't seem to leave the burrow for anything, including this. One thing though, have you tried setting the baby as a citizen of the burrow, and can they crawl around on their own at all?

I think this is also related to the fact that another dwarf assigned to the same burrow kept spamming "Item inaccessible" messages trying to fill a stockpile within the burrow with items outside of it.

To be clear, dwarves have no problem leaving their burrows, as long as they are on their way to another part of the burrow. ie burrows need not be contiguous.

You can, for instance, designate a workshop, the dining hall, the sleeping area, and the trade depot as 1 burrow, without connecting them, and dwarves assigned to that burrow will still be able to do their thing.

Can you upload a save demonstrating this behavior?

Can anyone else corroborate this issue?

I have experienced this issue myself. This occurred after I assigned my skilled specialists: smiths, stonecrafters, carpenters, jewellers, farmers, cooks, brewers, etc, to burrows appropriate for their industry. I also assigned a burrow for legendary miners and a burrow for newbie miners.

In addition to getting cancellation spam, I also got a heavy FPS drop: from 47 fps to 23 fps once I finished assigning everybody to their burrows and unpaused. This may have been because I had multiple parents attempting to retrieve their child at the same time (many of my specialists are mothers).
