Summary0000194: Hospital does not stock plaster powder, and doctors won't use stockpiled plaster to set bones
DescriptionI have plenty of chests and bags in the hospital, and the hospital zone is set to keep 5 units of plaster powder in stock, however the plaster powder I have produced is being stored in furniture stockpiles.

I also have not seen plaster used yet, but I'll keep trying.
Steps To ReproduceCreate a hospital zone and use a kiln to make plaster powder. Set the hospital zone to store plaster powder and make sure there are bags and chests constructed in the zone.

I can confirm this, I have tried with ultra specific plaster stockpiles in the hospital, bags, rock coffers, cabinets, and dumping the plaster powder in the hospital area and deforbiding it. None of these will get the dwarfs to accept that the hospital is stocking plaster or collect plaster to stock it.

In the same spirit as soap glob -> soap bar fix, I tried to make plaster bars custom reaction. No luck with most of the methods described above.

I can confirm it too - putting bags in the hospital, making plaster... something's wrong.

I tried the gypsum bar thing too, but that didn't help. The dwarfs are seeing the powder, but don't store it. I'm wondering if the powder exceeds the storage capacity of the containers, as one crutch in a chest will fill it, so the powder and bag might be too large.

An irrelevant side note: I'm sure one crutch doesn't fill a chest completely. Right now I have a chest with a crutch, 2 splints and a thread.

Confirming this. Also on a related note, I noticed something similar with the barracks' stocking of stuff:

The dwarves assigned to barracks seem to actually put their things in the armor stands, chests etc. in the barracks but only if there's no stockpiles associated with the items being put into the barracks. After I placed a stockpile for armor into my fort, a few dwarves suddenly rushed into my barracks to loot it's armor stand of the stuff my axedwarf had put there.

Might there be something similar going on in here as well? Which of the stockpiles is the plaster powder placed into? Disabling plaster stockpiling might make the dwarves take the powder into the hospital instead. Maybe. Can't check this myself currently since I abandoned the plaster powder- stocked fort of mine a while ago.

It seems to be the same with crutches... 65 in stock yet 0/5 in the hospital zone...(I have plenty of containers and a crutch specific stockpile in the hospital)...

I have got everything to be stored in the hospital except the gypsum plaster which I purchased from the Dwarven caravan. Oddly, the purchased bag of 10 Gypsum Plaster was stored in a furniture pile. It is a pile with Sand Bags turned off. There is an entry under Stone for Gypsum Plaster but I don't know if that is the powder or the cast plaster. At any rate, it looks as if the game thinks a bag of Gypsum Plaster sold as a powder is actually a piece of furniture, e.g. a kind of bag vs a bag of some kind of stuff. I can't build that bag from the build menu, however.

Should one even be able to store a bag inside a "container", given that a bag is classed as a "container" along with coffers?

It required 7 stone coffers to contain all the rest of the hospital supplies. An initial overfill on thread and cloth was due to placing four coffers at once and having too many Dwarves rush over with supplies. When I removed one chest which contained cloth and thread, they adjusted the supplies to the correct level. After that, I added one chest at a time until I had everything but the Gypsum stored. An 8th chest is empty.

Confirming also. Ive even tryed to create a gypsum stock pile inside the hospital zone, which worked fine. However the hospital zone still didnt recognize the gypsum was even there.

I also have this problem.
I've got 4 or 5 bags sitting in the stock pile and a dwarf with a broken foot and 3 bored doctors. They won't use it to fix him, so he seems to be eternally stuck in bed. At least they're feeding him.

Dekon (reporter)

Same problem.

I would say Crossmr makes a good point, except that I've seen hospital dwarves take thread/cloth from other stockpiles when the hospital didn't stock it. I don't think it's -necessary- for a hospital to have something in stock in order for it to be used - hospital dwarves will take from elsewhere.

I honestly think bone setting is just a bit broken right now, and doesn't get done. I had a couple hospital dwarves that were stuck for years with broken bones that never healed.

Confirmed, I have seen my Chief medical dwarf hauling thread and cloth directly into the patient's wounds, while there are no containers in my hospital zone or elsewhere (fresh fort).

If it helps at all, plaster appears to count as a rock. Ignoring the fact it's in a container by default, stone doesn't generally get put into a container. Perhaps if stone is changed from this behavior (read: mine carts and stuff), or plaster stops being a stone, this oddity will cease.

In my current fortress, 0.31.08, I bought lots of Plaster from the merchant, but dwarves didn't even move them to the hospital (even though I had a whole lot of unused bags and coffers built in the hospital).

I can confirm this, however my plaster seemingly disappears as soon as it's made, I can't find it anywhere. It's in none of my stockpiles and I can't zoom to it on the stocks screen but it's definately around somewhere. Not being used on my wounded yet though. Has anyone tried out Deimos58's theory about it being stone?

Actually, it appears that medical dwarves don't need plaster at all (31.10) when setting bones.
I got one of my dwarves injured (*whistles innocently*) shortly after embark; he needed, among other things, bone setting. There was no gypsum powder in the wagon, but the doctor dwarf didn't care: he simply walked over to the patient empty-handed when it was time for the "set bone" job and completed the procedure without a hitch. (I checked both the doctor's and patient's inventory for any sign of gypsum or cast while this was going on, and saw nothing.)

I had the same thing, though I had a fully stocked hospital with splints, crutches and gypsum (wasn't in the hospital but I had some in the fortress) and Urist McHouse set the bone without a problem, and then went and got some powder and put him in a cast. He put 2 casts on him (one on his leg and one on his arm, he fell down a shaft.) and all seemed well. However, shortly after the injured miner got up and started walking around on his cast without any crutches (despite me having some) causing him to go faint and gain the 'pain' status. A couple of months later, he had the casts off and was fine and working in the mines again.

That was the only injury I had in that fortress that required a cast, so I don't know if the problem has been fixed or if that was an isolated incident. I shall be making a new fortress and trying it again (sorry miners :P).

As of 0.31.12 (fresh world), gypsum powder was still not being transfered to my hospital, nor being used by the doctor.

By the way - setting of bones is a different task from applying cast (immobilization in dwarf terms), so the verbage in this is not technically correct. (As far as I can tell - I've seen dwarves "set bone" correctly, but "apply cast" is almost hopeless)

Just to back up my previous statement that is seems purchased powder is being used (this fortress was generated in 31.12):

In another follow-up, I made certain to only produce plaster in this fort and not buy any. The doctors successfully used the plaster to make casts.

Can anyone provide information or saves showing that purchased or produced plaster is never used?

If you can, let's try to zero in on what I'm doing vs. what you're doing.

Also, I must note that it is still never stored in the hospital.

I assume a water source, maybe even a well is required for a cast? I've seen some of my Docs get stuck at wells when they were applying a cast. It was a while ago though, so maybe they were doing something else.

I have a fortress where I've never made plaster, only traded for it. I have seen the plaster used (as in, I've seen dwarfs with casts on). I recently got the "Apply cast" bug. Unfortunately, forbidding the plaster didn't work for me, the dwarf would still go grab the bucket and wait by the well. I finally had to forbid all the buckets (sorry thirsty dwarfs) until splints were used to immobilize the dwarfs. Then unforbid the buckets.

The only problem with using plaster is 0002627 - if you can get your bone setter to pick up a bucket that already contains water, everything will work fine. It doesn't matter if the plaster is produced locally or imported.

.16, plaster is used to make casts. Not stocked though. So don't burrow restrict the hospital unless plaster is in it.

The hospital zone still MASSIVELY overstocks cloth and thread until it is full. Leaving no room for splints, crutches, and soap.

Then when done with the cloth/thread, the doctors HAVE to deposit the item in a stockpile and not the zone(may have been refilled while holding it), or else they will stand and spam job cancels if burrowed.

Dwarves do not use plaster to set bones, they use it for immobilization, in preference to splints too.

Dwarves just set the bones with their bare hands, or during surgery if it's a particularly bad break.
