Summary0010957: jewellers making images of vermin they hate
DescriptionBoth my gem-setters keep creating images of vermin (leeches, flies) they themselves hate when told to encrust furniture items with gems. The one who is also a gem-cutter has also created a figurine of the vermin he hates. They act exactly as if these were their favorite creatures, but their preferences say they hate them.

I haven't seen this behavior in anyone other than my jewellers.

This is presumably intentional. Art does not always venerate the subject; there are plenty of real-life artworks that are creepy, disturbing, and fear-driven. Dwarves sometimes make this relationship explicit by painting fellow dwarves cowering from whatever they despise.

If it's intentional, why is it restricted to jewellers? All other artists avoid making art of things they hate (making art of something someone else hates isn't the same thing at all).

It's not restricted to jewelers. In a trivial test fortress, I ordered 100 stone statues, 100 clay statues, and 100 wood figurines. The mason made 2 statues of mussels that he detests, the potter made 26 statues of moon snails that he detests, and the woodcrafter made 6 figurines of bark scorpions that he detests. Even the mason's measly two statues of mussels A) exceeded the number of all other vermin statues he made combined (0) and B) matched or exceeded the number of statues he made of each of his preferred animals. Meanwhile 1/4 of the statues my inexperienced potter churned out were of the snails he hates.

Presumably there are factors which affect the number of hated-vermin artworks (skill, traits, focus, media, ?), but that's a topic to explore on the forum, not in an errant bug report.
