I don't know if it's the same because they are older versions, and different operating systems.

How was DF installed? From a Mint package repo or just the bay12games download? Are all the dependencies installed? What versions are they, especially SDL_image and any libpng?

Does changing <DF>/data/init/init.txt to look for the .bmp files make any difference?

I installed the game from bay12games. I have SDL_image 2.0. I might not have libpng.

Making it look for bmp instead doesn't even change the error message for some reason.

Given that it's Linux, and not under Wine, I'm going to say it's a duplicate of 0002688 (which I know is old, but the underlying libraries at play are pretty much the same).
