0001362: crossbows don't do enough damage to camels
A hunter with good relevant skills (high master ambusher, accomplished marksdwarf and skilled archer) does too little damage to one-humped and two-humped camels.
This has been repeatedly observed with different hunters on different embarks.

I suspect this is not camel-specific but also true for other larger wildlife. Smaller animals such as marmots are killable but also tend to require a lot more ammo than in DF 40d.
Embark on a desert map and attempt to hunt camels.
20 bone bolts of superior and exceptional quality were not enough to kill a camel. Weapon was a no quality bronze crossbow. The camel was injured enough to eventually bleed to death after some time, but the hunter didn't return the corpse because it wasn't his kill.

There seems to be alot of tuning required for weapon damage in the current version. 0000023 is a good example where bites in the current game cant even hurt dwarves as long as they have clothing.

If bone is anything like wood then it is much less effective in this version. Wood is primarily used for training weapons and I'm sure this includes ammo. Try some iron bolts and see what that gets you.

Metal bolts are much more effective (5 shots with silver bolts), it just doesn't seem right that they're required (on desert maps at least). Fishing and farming don't require a metal industry to get started and keep working.

Except that you don't need to kill anything for farming and fishing (you do kill the fishes before you eat them, but thats not my point). You can make do with wooden or bone farming tools and bone fishhooks have been used since prehistoric times.

Hunting made due with wooden and bone tools since prehistoric times, too.

True, but the timeline is suppoused to be 15th and 16th century or so, not prehistoric.

Reminder sent to: Blah

Combat has been significantly rebalanced in recent versions. Do bolts do enough damage against camels in 31.12?

Because of the specific changes to the bolts, I'm going to mark this as resolved. The changes are ongoing, so there may still be some issues with bolts in general.

Blah, or any other reporter, if you find that this report is still tangible in versions 31.12 and above, please reopen this report with your new findings.

"The bolts in the currently released version are more like flying cheese graters or something in that they are light but really flat with a cutting surface, and the contact area changes I had to make to fix that..."
