0001890: Can't milk caged donkeys
I might just be doing something wrong, but this feels like a bug. I have a Dwarf set on "milking." I have a Farmer's Workshop with the task "milk animal" on repeat. I have a wooden cage directly outside the workshop containing both of my donkeys (one of which is female). The dwarf will not milk. I get the message "[name of dwarf] cancels milk creature: no creature". This particular Dwarf happens to also be a Stonecrafter, but there is no job conflict. I suspend the craft workshop and make sure he's listed as "no job" before I add the milk task.

Again, I suppose this might not be a bug and I could just be doing it wrong.

Are the donkeys tame? Have you tried letting them out of the cage?

The donkeys are tame. I did try it before I built the cages, with the same results.

You have to build the cage and then release them (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Cage#Moving_and_Releasing_Caged_Creatures [^]). Does that clear things up?

Just chain your animals that you want to use for butchering or milking or whatever, even pig tail ropes will do the trick, so use ropes!

So I should build a cage, assign the animal to it, unassign it, then try to milk it? I'll try that.

A "no creature" message could simply mean that any milkable animals have already been milked recently.

Did this solve your problem?

I've never seen anyone complain of donkeys in particular other than the general bugs of being faught over, etc. Think we can assume this was a user misunderstanding.
