0002895: Caravan guards hang around as "Friendly" after the merchants leave
Every so often I'll be scrolling through the unit list and I'll see some friendly Elf, Dwarf or Human just sitting around. They seem to not wander too far off the edge of the map. I'm not entirely certain whether they just appear or are part of trader caravans that sort of get lost. As far as I've seen they seem to be soldiers.
Play dwarf mode until you see a friendly guy in the units list near the border of the map.
It's not really a problem, they eventually seem to go away. I'll have to monitor more closely to see what happens. I've had this happen on two different forts both with 0.31.x. First fort was with 0.31.8 and 0.31.10. Second fort is pure 0.31.12.

Are you sure they aren't the liaison/diplomat? Either way, you should upload a save demonstrating this problem to http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^]

No, diplomats have "Diplomat" next to their name on the unit list. These guys have "Friendly" next to their name. I'll try uploading the older save since that was with vanilla df, newer one is with genesis mod.

Did you place your fortress on top of, or right next to, some kind of town or forest retreat?

No, it turns out both saves are modded, want to check to see if it's the mods fault first. Was almost certain one wasn't modded, it's still strange to see a friendly guy from the civilization just sort of standing there.

In 40D, occasionally a soldier from a caravan will hang around on the map edge for a bit and then continue on. That could explain the human and dwarves, but not the elves.

Well since it's modded the these elves have guards. So it could be the same thing.

@smjjames Do you recall if they changed from Merchant to Friendly in unit list?

Yea, thats how I would notice them. I would look at the unit list for whatever reason and spot the friendly unit and check it out. Sometimes I would notice it when some animal flashed the enraged message and check what was going on. I think it was mostly dwarves (I was having a problem with humans not appearing for some reason for a while), but its happened to the humans as well. They stick around for a month or so before moving on.

I don't think I ever saw the point where they switch from merchant to friendly.

Well this is probably still a bug, but it's really minor. I do not have a vanilla save with it, but I do have a genesis save with the friendly unit laying around if you still think it's needed. It doesn't really cause any harm, it just seemed curious and strange when I saw it.
