0003708: Ghost names that can't be engraved on a slab and nameless slab engravings
I have two violent ghosts whose names aren't available to be engraved on slab. I had a lot of corpses, so there are a lot of names available at the craftsdwarfs shop, but not these two, so there's no way to get rid of these two ghosts.
Instead, the list at the craftsdwarfs shop shows two entries without a name, like
" (Engrave Memorial)" instead of "Urist Popurist (Engrave Memorial)". It was possible to engrave an build these slabs, (it showed just "This is a Memorial to." instead of "This is a Memorial to Urist Popurist."), but it didn't help to satisfy the ghosts.
The site was previously reclaimed once.

I get this after reclaim, I keep DF running 24/7 so I haven't loaded a save up to this bug.

Yea, no way to reclaim after a Tantrum Spiral. You will soon have 7 dead or dying dwarves, angry ghosts are nothing to scoff at.

I have a similar problem. I have a ghost of a dead swordsdwarf that I can't bury or memorialize. His name is not available for engraving onto a slab, and although his corpse is in the stocks list, I can't locate it anywhere. Zooming to it just leads me to an empty murky pool.

I suspect the corpse might have been destroyed by being frozen that murky pool, but I can't prove that.

The nameless memorial engravings are seemingly from killing the various civilian trolls that arrive with goblin sieges.
2010-12-20 13:24
I have a dead caravan guard that I can't bury because their corpse was destroyed by a freezing pool, and they came back as a ghost. When trying to memorialise them, I find that their name doesn't appear in the list.

I also have some memorials I can engrave for "", but there are more null entries than I have dead, unburied people, although I do have some dead war animals that might have something to do with that issue.
2010-12-31 11:41
I have the same issue: Three ghosts with corpses in river which can not be engraved to slabs because thier names are missing as well as six "nameless" engraves.
2011-01-03 15:05
I have this problem too.

The ghost is obviously a dwarf (not a troll, as theorized above by Quietust), and was a military guard for the merchants. My theory is that the military guards for merchants (but not the merchants themselves) are generally nameless, and are only granted a name upon their conversion to undeath. Thus, their name isn't available under the memorial slab because at the time of their demise they still didn't have a name.
2011-01-06 11:12
I just have to say that no dwarf should ever have to memorialize a foreign ghost. That is like having to memorialize every goblin one kills. If anything, the foreign ghost might act more like a poltergeists and should be excised by a dwarven priest or something.

rpetiger has this save for a ghost name that can't be engraved after a reclaim:

Sunday: I wasn't talking about troll ghosts - I was talking about memorials, since the blank entries consistently appear in groups between groups of goblin invaders within the memorial engraving list.

Pretty much every historical figure that died at your fortress is eligible for memorials - megabeasts can also be selected, and likely even killed caravan pack animals.

I did some investigation today, and it seems that only historical figures can be engraved on a memorial - and the ghosts for some reason are not in the list of historical figures of the Legends mode. Maybe the guards are erroneously spawned only as units, but not as historical figures?..

This list can also be used to find out the probable origin of those nameless engravings - in my case it is 3 "nameless yak cows", one killed by goblins, and two crushed by a bridge.

Here is my save with this issue, by the way:

And to further confirm my analysis, I made a memory hack that makes the ghosts engravable by stealing a historical figure record from a dead goblin. No unforseen negative effects noticed after two evenings of play.

I am also experiencing this with a murderous ghost and it currently has brought my fort to a complete halt, for fear of losing a legendary or noble dwarf and possibly causing a tantrum spiral. The reason for being unable to engrave slabs and memorialize the dwarf ghost is caused by the body being completely destroyed, as was the case for a very stupid dwarf who happened to wander under my atom smasher while I was trash compacting about 1000 units of refuse. It seems you can only engrave slabs to dwarves whose bodies either are still present on the map, or who are still alive.
2011-10-05 18:51
I had the same issue in Fortress mode. I reclaimed my fortress after a bunch of my dwarves had died. I had dead bodies everywhere. However, about ten ghosts ended up being raised. I couldn't build memorials for all of the ghosts, but I could bury the bodies (the bodies were still all available).

I also have this issue. One of my miners found the magma sea the hard way. He was on fire and partway up the stairs before he died. His corpse continued burning, and eventually disappeared entirely. Now I have a haunted mineshaft to nowhere.

I am running 34.04, for what it is worth.

2012-03-05 20:37
Exact same thing happened to me. However I reclaimed that fortress again, and the violent miner (Sibrek Solominder), appeared as a engraveble again.
2012-03-07 07:03
This also happened to me in my current fort (34.02 -> 34.04 -> 34.05); the dwarf arrived in wave 9 and was a normal citizen. I think he got burned up by magma, but there's no way to tell. Never abandoned, so never reclaimed, it just happened during normal play.
2012-03-11 22:20
It appears that being a historical figure doesn't stop a ghost from being un-slab-able. I have a dwarf ghost (I think he was a caravan guard, but I'm not sure) that doesn't show up on the engraving list (only thing on there are two kobolds; it's a young fort) and he just transformed into a werepanda, which I assume wouldn't be possible if he weren't a historical figure.

Same problem :(
