0005877: Miners channel tile they're standing on, resulting combat report is malformed
If a miner channels a square which has a wooden log in it, the miner and the log sometimes undergo a collision. This collision produces a combar report with the incorrect wording:

"it The Miner in the body part [etc.]"
Embark on a new site where there are trees, with an axe and a pick. Designate a woodcutter to chop down the tree (do not create a wood stockpile). Designate a miner to channel the same square where the chopped log is now lying.

Same here, I can confirm this.

I'm not sure what causes the malformed log, but the root cause is handled now. Does the malformed log come up in other more normal collision circumstances?

I suppose we need hit a dwarf with a falling log, but we can't create arbitrary items in arena mode.

I've seen a report like that when a miner fell after channeling the tile below himself, with no other items in the tile, if that helps.

The malformed log also comes up in the case where a falling creature is wearing especially rigid/strong armor that seems to protect them from falling damage:

You slam into an obstacle!
Your left upper arm takes the full force of the impact, bruising the muscle!
it You in the upper body, but the attack is deflected by Your adamantine greaves!
You are no longer stunned.
You stand up.

I'm seeing this consistently as well. I'm digging lots of channels and it's killing lots of miners. The malformed message is only one part. There is a painful fall with each square channeled if the miner is standing on it.

IIRC the cause of the use of the third person in combat logs happens when the dwarf involved is ID# 0, which under a "Play now!" embark is always the pre-fab miner. I'm not sure whether this is true for "Prepare carefully" embarks.

I've seen this malformed combat report with miners (and, as far as I can recall, only with miners) in 0.34.11 and never quite understood why it happened, but my first two dwarves in my "Prepare carefully" embark setups are always miners and if they don't die in accidents they're my main digging crew. I never noticed who *exactly* had malformed reports, but what Drazinononda said makes sense. I'd have to do some potentially injurious science to confirm it, but eh.

I've also seen this happen with a pitted goblin maceman ( http://i.imgur.com/CF4goky.png [^] ) and here's the save with more goblins about to be dropped: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=8376 [^]

I let the game keep running, and it happens again. The first goblin (that I screencapped) is Nguslu Onxosnamox, but on my version of the fort it also happens to Bax Arstrukostub. They're both macemen-- oh, wait, a previous goblin named Xuspgas (landed before Nguslu) who's a swordsman also landed funny. The swordsman Utes and both trolls I pitched down there landed normally.

This also happens when a dwarf removes a down staircase with no place to stand other than the staircase. The material used to make the staircase falls on the dwarf when they climb down the stairs.
