0000618: Caged goblins are freed after reclaiming
My fortress got attacked after less than a year by a squad of well-equipped goblin macemen.

Needless to say, much Fun was had. Cage traps initially accounted for most of the squad, but the last two proceeded to incapacitate my entire population. The final goblin wandered into a cage trap while trying to kill the last of my dwarves, and then I abandoned since I had no able-bodied dwarves left to treat the wounded. At this point there were 5 caged goblins in cage traps.

On reclaim, the goblins were (a) mysteriously uncaged, and (b) listed as Friendly on the unit list. And indeed, they do not seem to be aggressive towards my dwarves.

Trying to kill the goblins doesn't work. Giving my reclaim squad a Kill order, I can target the goblins, and the squad will run over to the target, but then they will not actually attack.

Yep, didn't find that for some reason.
Is the un-caging expected, though?

Basically during an abandon/reclaim, anything that's caged will get released, at least that's the way it's been since the last version. (A lot of other stuff happens too, but it's been so long since I did a thorough test in adventurer mode that I can't say for sure any more)

This has led to "megaprojects" of creating a goblin retirement home, goblin fortress, etc, on the forums.

Ok, so about the only remaining thing in this report is that you can select a Friendly unit for a kill order, but it is not effective. (Either you shouldn't be able to select them, or the squad should actually attack - I'd say you should be able to attack, given the sandbox nature of the rest of the game)

Might be related to 0000481 then.

If you save and reload, does the kill order work then?

This is not a dupe of 481.

Saving/reloading does not change the behaviour.

okay, so are you saying that caged hostile monsters letting themselves out and converting to friendly monsters on reclaim is . . . expected behavior ?

Toady has started asking for saves for military/equipment bugs, so if you have a save demonstrating this problem, it might be helpful to upload it to http://dffd.wimbli.com/. [^] Thanks!
