0006704: Already-felled trees "collapse" when mining under their former roots
Usually happens a while after I cut down trees. I get the message "Something has collapsed on the surface" but when I zoom to the location there is absolutely nothing there. Tested on 3 different forts with different types of trees.
Cut down a tree in Fortress mode and wait. It happens at random intervals, and not on all of the trees.

Can confirm. When it happens, there appear to be 1x1 blocks of earth suspended in the air after a tree is chopped. I don't know why they are there, but they appear to be supported by the tree.

Another confirm. Additionally zooming to the announcement for me takes me to mid air (1 z above ground) and I have absolutely nothing around there above or on ground afterwards.

Played all of two minutes on my first world in .40.01 and I got this message three times with the same circumstances. Agree that it's related to trees, but I can't tell what is "caving in." No dust either.

Assuming this is the same as http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=7053 [^] , here's a save where a random cave-in occurs one step after loading the game: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=8873 [^]

I have encountered a similar case. Occaisionally logs drop. Usually not though.

I just got this message when I mined out a root tile under a still-standing tree. The tree vanished, no logs appeared, and all of the tiles that had been marked as root tiles for that tree turned into normal soil wall tiles.

I'm assuming that mining out a single root tile is causing the attached tree to "cave in".

Were any of you all mining on the top-most underground z-level?

I've done extensive burning in arena mode to find that that sometimes there actually is a 1x1 cave in. Punched holes through the arena rock.

OK, ran into this bug again, this time doing the following:

1) Run into tree roots, remove designation (did not dig out any root tiles).
2) Designate tree for chopping, woodcutter does his job.
3) Mine out the now-soil tile immediately under where the tree trunk had been.
4) "Something has collapsed on the surface" + zoom to tile where the tree trunk used to be.

So I *think* the bug is due to previously existing + removed tree trunks "collapsing". Maybe the memory isn't being cleared/reset properly when the tree is cut down?

Also, if the memory is the problem, it may not matter what the tile is immediately under the original tree trunk, whether roots or a soil toil, either way we end up with the "collapsed" message. So fixing one problem may fix a couple of bugs if they all have the same root cause (and judging by the symptoms, that is a distinct possibility).

Edit: Sometimes mining a tile not underneath the missing trunk will still cause the message to occur, but the tile you zoom to is always beneath the felled tree's canopy.

It may not be directly underneath the tile, either. I haven't dug underneath tree roots at all, and I'm getting spammed with it.

It may potentially be mining under that x-y coordinate. Not sure, though.

It seems now that this may be a straight-out duplicate of 0007533, given the nature of the comments over there and the ones here.

I've just had a collapse which looks like it was due to the tree maturing from being a sapling. I had cleared out a largish area around the wooden walls, and some trees have grown back in the zone. The maturing appears to have either lifted some soil with it, or the soil has been displaced by the roots.

I think this bug has been fixed, since all of the collapses that I'm seeing now seem to related to some sort of growth (sapling -> tree, small tree -> bigger tree, etc.). At any rate, I haven't seen any phantom collapses in the last several versions that resulted directly from mining activity.
