Is there anything specific going on when the game crashes? Ordered your soldiers to attack an enemy or somesuch?

Really, if you could provide as much in-game information as possible, that would be great. Windows-generated crash reports are often not as helpful as in-game evidence. In the event we determine it's some problem in the game, a save may also be useful.

Same is happening to me. I'm not certain yet but I think it's when you hit 0 dwarves idle. I have less than 100 dwarves and fps are super but then it was freezing for a seconds at a time and I put up with that for a while but then it locked up for longer so I saved.

Next mornin loaded up the save and I go about ordering some stuff done and unpause. Soon after but not at always the same time it locks up.

edit: It's not idlers being 0 but there could be something around lots of dwarves passing one another in corridors
