Summary0006421: Marksdwarves won't use archery targets until they reach novice skill
DescriptionI know there are 20 billion bugs regarding archery target, military training, and equipment issues.

But there is one bug I haven't seen reported yet (at least it's not showing up when I search for "archery target"

Basically, the bug is simple. If you manage to get all the other issues sorted out and finally get an archery range that your dwarves will use and have all your dwarves equipped and have them using the right ammo....Only dwarves that are novice + in marksmanship skill will ever use archery targets.

Which basically means that if you want to train an unskilled marksdwarf, combat is the only way possible.
Steps To Reproduce1. Make 10 crossbows, 10 quivers, and several thousand ammo.
2. Make sure than none of the ammo is ever put into a stockpile.
3. Build an archery range.
4. Assign a squad that has both skilled and unskilled marksdwarves to all the targets.
5. Manually dump all ammo that may already be in a quiver.
6. Designate that squad to use any ammunition for any task.
7. Unforbid ammo, wait for them to pick it up.
8. Make sure that every single labor is off on all marksdwarves, and that they are not on active duty.
9. Wait.

I can't upload to DFFD because the save file is about twice the size limit for their upload service.

Even zipped? Maybe try reproducing it in a smaller world? It might save Toady the time of building a test case.

I can not reproduce this bug in 40.09
It is still absurdly difficult to get dwarfs to shoot at archery targets properly, but I have definitely trained a few completely unskilled migrants to adequate marksdwarfs.

Thanks, Cosinus. Between that and the lack of an initial save, I'll mark this "unable to reproduce".

Please reopen this report or PM a manager on the forums if you have a save that reproduces this problem in 0.40.09+.
