|0006874||Dwarf Fortress||Dwarf Mode -- Nobles||public||2014-07-09 14:18||2014-09-14 09:43|
|Assigned To||Toady One|
|Priority||normal||Severity||minor||Reproducibility||have not tried|
|Target Version||Fixed in Version||0.40.09|
|Summary||0006874: SITE members automatically promoted to entity leader (MONARCH/king/queen)|
|Description||After an attack on my fort which is only in it's first year I noticed that one of my dwarves has become the king, I have not fulfilled any of the necessary things for a king to arrive as it is only still in the first year.|
|Have you checked his relationship page? Perhaps he was related to the old King who may have died outside of combat?|

I had the same thing happen, after about a year my chief medical dwarf randomly became the king. Not sure if I know everywhere to look, but he didn't seem to be related to the old one.
Edit: I don't think mine happened on load, it was about halfway through a longish session after loading my reloading my fort for the second time.
|I've had this happen to me too. I didn't notice exactly when it happened, but there was a message about the fortress not having a liaison, or it could have been on load?|
This also happened to me. From my Legends, it seems that the Mountainhomes were attacked several times and destroyed. This did not however prevent starting a party to settle new lands, and as soon as I arrived, one of my dwarves became king, issued mandates, got angry, so I had to kill him. Next in line was another dwarf, who became the Queen.
So it seems to be a succession issue, and/or it might be an error to be able to start from an extinct Dwarven civilization.
Bouchart from 0007052 has this save:
I can confirm this still happens in 4003.
Checking the new monarch's relationship page doesn't crash the game, although it might be interesting to note that this particular dwarf doesn't have any relatives at all, despite being set in a world 500 years old.

As I understand, first 7-people squad is randomly generated & won't have any relationships around the world.
As well as 1st & 2nd migration waves.
|If the civilization was extinct, this is supposed to happen - your dwarves are rebuilding it and one of them is chosen to be king/queen. I think it is intentional.|
|I also have a case of this in 40.03. I have a total of 14 dwarves, and one of them seems to think that he is king. Never seen a king before.|
|Isn't this intentional? If you're the last remaining outpost of a civilisation, you're going to get the king.|
|Yeah this sounds somewhat intentional to me.|
|If it's a feature that's supposed to stay, i think it'd be a good idea to give an embark warning when reviving a dead civilisation so you know what you're getting into.|
In playing around Legends mode, I think that succession in general has a tendency to pick from the "abstracted population" rather than proper historical figures.
In several cases I've seen new royal lines where the monarch is "of unknown parentage", is unmarried with no children, and has just a handful of events (like, becoming farmer or being attacked) before being crowned
Found again in 40.03 - my civ screen shows no other civs at all, though they do exist. link - http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9037 [^]
Expedition leader is about to become queen.
Found this in 40.04. Suddenly my clerk turned into a queen in the winter of year 5 (still doing clerical work though).
I took a copy of the game files and had a look at the Legends. Apparently my civilization had only 1 hillock and my site, the hillock got invaded so a random dwarf at my site was promoted. Makes sense but it would be nice to make the choice yourself.
|Just happened in 40.05 - according to my civ screen, my civ is not extinct. The bigger issue is that this came with no announcment in year one.|
I also got this bug. My female Chief Medical Dwarf was promoted to "King" without any warning except a missing liaison with the fall caravan.
However, I was still able to assign her to bookkeeper and manager, and all of her civilian labours remained active and modifiable.

|This is intentional, but I didn't add the announcement to all of the circumstances. I've tried to catch as many as I could now, with appropriate sentences. I'll also consider an embark warning if it is practical.|
