Alright I will do that when I get home.
After observing, for a while. It seems that there is no eating or drinking while on station or on patrol, but at the very second that a period of no orders comes, the hungry and thristy icons go away indicating that they can then eat and drink from the backpack. |

Ok, here is the file. To see the bug, set the squads on the active/train schedule. When a squad goes on patrol, you can see that they won't eat whats in their backpacks until they are off duty, no matter how hungry or thristy they get.
The schedule is currently set for one month on, one month off. I just thought of it after uploading, but If you set the schedule for two months on, the problem is more obvious. By then everyone will be hungry and thirsty... and angry! |

Another bug in this file that's kindof more fun than serious, is that my militia commander lost her arm in a fight, and never even went to the hospital or bled. She went right back to her station at the front gate.
You can see that there is no treatment in her health records, other than a soap washing from a previous wound.

Ok, I think I understand what's going on here. It did not occur to me that a whole month of patrolling is too much for the average dwarf. My minimum number of soldiers was set to the default size of 10, which means that everyone has to be on task for the whole month. Apparently, this condition also prevents eating from the backpack! Setting the minimum number of soldiers to 4 (out of 10) aleviates this problem.
I'm thinking that the backpack is not for eating while on duty, but for shortening any breaks that are taken. No breaks, no food and drink. I may have misunderstood what to expect from the carried rations. |

If backpacks and waterskins aren't usable while on duty, they rather defeat the purpose of being used in the first place. This is almost definitely a bug, and a rather nasty one at that. |

I seem to be having an alltogether different backpack issue. More precisely, my soldiers wont carry them. Food stacks up in my Finished Goods stockpile (where the backpacks are), and the food, when (v)iewed, shows a soldier as "owner" - which seems to imply it should be in the backpack sitting next to it in the same stockpile. Somehow the food is also tagged as Finished Goods once it gets tagged to the soldiers, again, probably due to backpacks. As far as dwarves starving or getting thirsty, I watch the training dwarfs stop and eat even with max# set at 10, so I think that bug is gone.
EDIT: just noticed all the food in my F.G. stockpile belongs to one single soldier. I think he was caught in an endless loop of pickup/drop equipment (my soldiers all take a few months off for mining duty) and kept getting new food everytime.
EDIT2: Now another soldier is doing it. Just watched him load up on food, run to the F.G stockpile, drop it (including food), then re-quip, get more food, return to stockpile and.......about 45 meals are tagged as being owned by 2 dorfs now. They are off duty and have nothing else to do, so they keep unequiping and re-equiping the backpack and waterskin, getting new food (and alcohol) everytime. Very very strange. Potentialy destructive if they take all the food.
EDIT3: Interestingly, the food never rots. Some fish they claimed have been sitting there for 3 fort years now. I set them to not carry any food in their backpack, and teh problem has mostly gone away. I have a 3 month on-duty training rotation, and they never starve or get thirsty. They have been going back and slowly eating the old food still sitting there.

KahunaGod: what you've described is an entirely different issue, more of a side-issue of 0003471 when combined with 0001986. |
|

|
Lowering the "minimum soldiers" setting fixed my related problem: I had rotten owned food sitting in my barracks indefinitely. It appears to have been eaten, which is slightly disturbing... |

I removed the intentional/expected tag - I agree with Quietust in that it can't possibly be intended that they don't use this functionality when it is its sole purpose.
I also stickied this in its own right despite it being a child of 0000535 as that listing has become an albatross of various reports. |

Toady may need an up-to-date save (0.34.02+) to fix this problem. It would be helpful for someone to upload a save to http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^] and post the link here. |

If this issue still exists, it should be replicable by anyone. Just set minimum dwarves on duty to 10 and let er rip. I'm too pressed for time these days to get a military going or I'd do it myself. |

Yeah, disregard my previous post, confirmed now. It is a very annoying bug, in fact. |
