Summary0009396: Brawling causes spilled drinks (spatter)
DescriptionPedestrian activity on a large area of (above ground, lit, mostly outside) glass flooring is associated with the appearance and spread of mysterious pools of Swamp Whiskey; trace amounts of other substances occasionally noted but do not seem to be spreading.

The pattern may seem familiar to anyone who has played a game with the "dwarves track substances" bug in full flourish.

(Incidentally, one of my most memorable games, a desperate struggle to contain and decontaminate an outbreak of frozen forgotten beast blistering agent on the snowy slopes of a volcano.)

Original Summary:
Pedestrian Traffic + Green Glass Floor = Pools of Swamp Whiskey
Additional Information* A save file with the behaviour evident is available upon request.

* I wasn't sure if tracking substances constitutes a type of flow, so reported it under the 'environment' category.

* As far as I can tell, I'm not producing unusual quantities of swamp whiskey.

A couple of additional notes that are obvious in retrospect.

This large green glass floor covers a volcano which has been accidentally "explored" all the way to the magma sea.

The swamp whiskey appeared with the double-tilde character, ie, as a stack of glob or liquid substance.

Looking more closely, I can see Swamp Whiskey tracking appearing on a green glass bridge that does not span any lava whatsoever; however, in this instance, the tile is merely coloured brown, although the designation (pool) is the same.

Shot in the dark here, but might you have a booze stockpile near the volcano? In an older version, I noticed that fire snakes would crawl around and "burn up" my barrels (in actuality, the barrels would just get damaged and wear away without flame), leaving the booze on the floor.

Nope, definitely not... also I've been fairly conservative with leaving open magma unmonitored ever since my first encounter with fire sprites. The alcohol is all down in the tavern, at least five levels under the magma surface and 20-30 squares on the horizontal plane.

The phenomena is spreading. I can't promise that this is an exclusive list, but the pools of swamp whiskey have now been joined by pools of spelt beer and a particular dwarf's blood. They are now appearing in stain format on green glass roads as well as green glass bridges, and as glob-stack type object markers on clay loam, farm plots, and several squares of 'dense' wild plants.

I removed a glass green bridge, and then designated a new basalt bridge to be constructed in its place. The placeholder image of the bridge-to-be was tile-stained as if it had 'traces' of contaminant on it, and the inspection tool revealed that the traces showed up at the spot, currently in mid air: the swamp whiskey, the blood, and also several piles of vomit that had previously not been visible. None of these were present on the new bridge when completed.

I've managed to control it by aggressive use of old techniques. Roofing over the floor covering the magma pipe has made it explicitly clear that this phenomena ONLY OCCURS OUTSIDE.

Finally, if an administrator comes around to reading this: the category should clearly be changed to 'Contaminants/Spatter'. I'd been looking in the Fortress-mode-only categories, and forgotten the name of the phenomenon.

Isn't this then just 0000296, "Pools/smears/spatters of blood, dust and other materials multiply themselves, get tracked around too much", with initil pools of alcohol coming from your tavern, from pools similar to those that were just up to recent update killing our cats (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ [^] 2015-12-12 "Stopped cats from dying of alcohol poisoning after walking over damp tavern floors and cleaning themselves").

Can you upload your save (zipped region folder) to http://dffd.bay12games.com/ [^] and post a link to it here, please?

It's most definitely not "just" that issue. [WALKING_SPREADS_SPATTER_DWF:NO] should prevent walking from spreading spatter, so the question here is what kinds of contamination are occurring, and where, and under what circumstances *despite* that: hence all the obsessive detail with respect to what sorts of terrain is getting new pools of sewer brew and what sorts of terrain aren't.

If I had that option set to 'yes' I imagine there would be all sorts of horrifying spatter and pools everywhere, just like in the bad old days. There's no visible sign of any spilt alcohol in the tavern, or anywhere else inside, and as I've mentioned, the phenomena definitely only occurs outside.

I've uploaded a recent save that has some instances of the spatter under discussion. I'm afraid it's come back down off of peak contamination due to my gameplay, but there are still a few active spots... quick way to find them is to switch to the area restriction settings in the digging menu and look for the restricted areas. road/bridge spatter is also restricted.

This may be what is freeing up some mugs that are otherwise useless after being claimed and unused by tavern guests served by the keeper (see 0009403).

It's now been marked as "Brawling causes spilled drinks (spatter)," which may well be true, but just to make sure there's no confusion, I should note that immediately problem in the save file attached here is the appearance of drink pool objects *outside*, most often at the threshold of indoors/outdoors, and with frequency/spread related to amount of pedestrian traffic.

Brawling as causation is an inference arising from deep familiarity with game mechanics, not something the original submitter can vouch for. (Although yes, somehow some goblin poets *did* get in a fight a while back, now that I think of it.)

I've verified that drink traces are appearing on the footwear of dwarves heading towards the outdoors, although there is no sign on any of the interior fortress floors.

In the current biome, it appears to rain relatively frequently, and this might provide a mechanism for the initial spill/spatter appearance; the beverages might be washing off of the feet and appearing as glob-pile items, which then might be picked up when walked through, washed off, et cetera. I will see if winter changes anything.

Yes, the "contaminate/rain/contaminate" cycle is known to create an ever-increasing spread of contaminants outdoors; this problem is being tracked in 0000296. It's likely that your Tavern initiated the process, either by brawling or drunken drink-spilling. I would imagine that both are intended to cause a bit of a mess.
