Summary | 0003110: Blood pools/splatterings/smears spontaneous apperance
Description | 5 years ago I killed a horse. 3 years later I started getting blood out of nowhere. It spawned only above ground, and in a localized area. Dwarfs are still able to track it, and I just started getting it 14Z levels above the ground.

It was probably coating your dwarves' clothing and some rainwater washed it off. If your embark location has mostly dry weather, this might explain it. |

Others from 0000296 and its various related reports have reported that the square that a creature was killed at will still generate splatter spreading even after all squares including the origin square has been cleaned. I suspect this is the case in this report. |

The main problem was that this was 3 years after the last time I killed any wild animal or hunted at all. When I start a fortress, I start getting food mainly from fishing and hunting, when there is little threat of of enemies. Then I move to start farming and butchering as my only source. The blood in question was a deer blood pool and splatter, I had no deer on the map, none being raised, and none caged. It spawned 14 Z levels above ground, where the deer died. It was on top of a tower I was constructing at the time, and only 2 people had ever been there. The only way I can think it got there is from teleporting or spawning up there. |

I agree with Q. I've seen rain and water (long story) "create" blood puddles that then contaminate entire fortresses. |
