Summary | 0000556: Pumping from ocean to cistern, ocean drains, cistern never full.
Description | I've encountered this in my three most recent forts. I pump from the ocean (other water sources not tested) directly to a hole (open space) 1 or more floors above the cistern. The cistern consists of an empty room with a floodgate on one side leading to the farming area and is connected via a diagonal to another tile which is below a well. When the pump is active, it pumps water from the ocean to the cistern. If the cistern's lower level has 7/7 water, the pump still consumes water from the ocean, but does not add additional water at the output (on top of the 7/7 water from the lower level).
Steps To Reproduce | Build cistern described as follows and fill. Key: W=Wall _=Channel %%=pump X=floodgate o=Well ~=Ocean Water Tile Top Level WWW o ~%%_W <= The water level on this floor is always 0/7! WWW Lower Level WWW WWWW W W WW W X WWWWW

The diagram was butchered, but you probably can get the idea. If not, copy the butchered diagram and paste it somewhere that uses a fixed width font... |

I'm reminded of a similar issue back from 0.28.181.40d - see http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=42571.0 [^] |

With that forum post in mind, it seems like there is a feature to allow the ocean to absorb water like an aquifer can. If there is such a feature, maybe it is being incorrectly applied to artificial ponds, when it should be applied only when pumping into the ocean. |

I noticed this too, in 0.31.23. I tried to make a cistern to purify water from my tiny corner of haunted ocean, and made sure that I built walls around the level where the pump was—that being the level above the ocean, obviously—and when the pump filled up the lower z-level of the cistern, it just kept briefly putting water on top of it, which would then instantly disappear. Had to deconstruct the walls around the upper z-level to use it as a water source. |

This sounds like 0003161. |
