Summary | 0009342: Animals stuck in trees on embark
Description | Immediately after an embark with a lot of animals in a heavily forested/woodland area, I noticed that many of my animals were up in trees. Assigning them to a pasture yielded the alert "...cancels pen/pasture stray ___: Animal inaccessible." Cutting down the offending trees brought most of the animals down to ground level, except the ducks who remained floating. A few of the animals suffered injuries from "flying logs", but none appear to have suffered injuries from falling. (I apologize if this is a repeat, I couldn't find it related to animals at embark. I did find the similar ones with migrants and random dorfs.)
Steps To Reproduce | Embark with a lot of animals in a heavily wooded area. Not tested.

Related to that 0009252, "Dwarves get stuck in trees" you are talking about, maybe mainly that note 0009252:0033861. Looking at older reports there is also 0008640 "Animals get stuck up trees". Probably not a pure duplicate. But yes, searching through old bugreports may be sometimes hard, you need to use the same wording. Thanks you checked that, though. |

Later in that same save I had a duck and chicken spontaneously in a tree. Didn't realize they were there until I cut down the tree. The duck floated in the air for a season or so before landing, but the chicken got crushed by falling logs. No idea how/why they got in the tree. No aggressive animals had been around, so unlikely to be "escaping" as with dwarfs issue. Also of note, the animals at embark in trees were in the center of the map around the wagon. They spawned there, not moved in from map edge. |

The ducks were flying, not floating, and are quite capable of getting into trees that way. The chicken could have climbed (possibly scared by another creature) or could have been "creature swapped" into the tree by a flying duck (0003371). |
